BTS is a special group. They fuse several musical genres in their music....especially this current new album. The combo of rappers and singers in this industry is unprecedented anywhere. It creates a special dynamic. Their songs have been interconnected for several years and very deep. Great choreos and songs plus very humble group of guys. The lyrics are deep here.
Watched the above video/song and have to say I will probably forget all about it after I'm done typing this. No idea why people get so hyped up about uninteresting, overproduced pop music, regardless of its national origin...
^Why do people get so hyped up about their favorite football or baseball players? It's not like them winning the Superbowl will give you a bump in salary or anything. Logic doesn't always have the best explanatory power for these phenomena. Some things just happen because humans are an emotional species.

Also you're only evaluating the entire group just based on one song. They actually have songs of multiple genres other than just pop, and they draw in fans not only because of the "over-produced" music but because of the masterful story telling and cinematography, told uniquely through Korean sensibilities and yet the stories are much relatable, and the music westernized. They're probably more unique in that they release short films along with their standard music videos.
Everything is involved into making a fine product. It's okay if the music is not your taste, but people don't blindly like something just because.

I agree. This is why rock bands and people with actual talent have a hard time getting attention now.

Good answer. People like what they like, and while sometimes they can give factual-sounding reasons, at the end of the day the best answer is "just because." Some people like sports players; some people like K-pop; some people like both; some people like neither. Just because.
K-pop in general, and BTS specifically, have obviously struck a cord with a large number of people in a variety of countries around the world. Professional musicians may be able to give technical-sounding explanations as to why this specific type of music is appealing, but for most people, they like K-pop just because.
I like BTS because I find their music (what I've heard of it, anyway) to be catchy. But others might compare it unfavorably to fingernails on chalkboards. I find their music videos to be wholesome and creative. But others might find them to be decadent and unimaginative. I find the band members to be good-looking (though I don't care for the dyed hair). But others might find them to be ugly. We all have different tastes.
Kpop does not dominate in the west. Please put down the opium pipe.
It does NOT have to dominate! It just needs mainstream acceptance in the West (which is slowly coming as evidenced by BTS topping the Billboard 200 album chart recently - NO ONE tops that chart without being at least somewhat mainstream), and the revenue stream will be good for years to come! Mind you, I'm NO pop fan (more a hard rock/metal fan than anything else) but I'm calling it as I see it!
BTS aren't bad but too hiphopish and I'm guessing: appealing to female audience.
If you're a hetero guy: K-ARA, T-ARA (and everyone with "ara" in the end i guess lol , 2NE1, SNSD, etc.
I wouldn't say they were hip-pop per se. I've never actually heard of hip-pop until maybe a year ago and I still don't understand the concept. It's virtually unheard of as a genre in Europe and I'm a undergrad uni student.
