We've been watching cars fail to make it up the hill outside our development here in No. Fulton. A tow truck just picked up some business! My son made it home from work ok, but had to park down on the street. Our driveway is snow covered and slippery.

no they are not. dot is saying icing on all major roads. that said its not solid ice like on side streets so you can still drive on it.

but good luck getting to an interstate.

Quick question, are snow chains required in ATL, or is the general rule to just stay off of the roads?

I don't think they are required.......I have never heard it said before .

My husband just called me to inform me that I was NOT to go to work- to take a sick day. We live in Dacula and he said Old Fountain Road was a sheet of ice. This is not a highway like 316 but a major thourghfare from Dacula over to Lawrenceville/Hamilton Mill. This is from a man who grew up in DC area and nows how to drive in these conditions.

Luckily I am a teacher and Gwinnett schools are closed. I think many schools do jump the gun but this closing sounds valid.

People are driving out of my Decatur-area subdivision with no problems (can hear the crunchy snow/ice, though).

Snow chains are generally only used in mountainous regions that get alot of snow, and wouldn't really be useful when there's only 1/4" of snow on the road. You'd end up doing more damage to the road than anything else. They've also got a max speed limit of maybe 30 mph, so they wouldn't work well with all the NASCAR wannabees around here.

Just woke up and looked outside---not much snow on the ground but from what I've read here and am now hearing on the radio--chances are good that the ice is there and it doesn't take much to hit it the wrong way and start spinning. Staying in.

From the 'AJC'---havent' caught up with whatever happened at Hartsfield --sounds bad---

'The state Department of Transportation reported dozens of metro Atlanta roads closed early Friday, from Bartow and Cherokee counties in the north to Fayette and Coweta counties to the south, and from Carroll County near the Alabama border east to DeKalb County.

According to the DOT, 27 vehicles were invovled in a crash before 5 a.m. on the ramp from I-285 westbound to I-85 northbound in College Park. Three motorists were transported to local hospitals.

A wreck involving a Georgia State Patrol vehicle blocked all southbound lanes of I-75 at Exit 293 in Bartow County just after 6 a.m.'
