Ripken set on downtown Augusta stadium | The Augusta Chronicle

Cal Ripken Jr. said Tuesday night that he is feeling a bit more positive about the future of minor league baseball in Augusta.

Now the land, once home to the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, will go on the auction block after Gov. Sonny Perdue signs legislation passed two weeks ago that dissolves the hall.

The Jacoby Group, a development company working with the Ripken group, said it will bid on the land.

I walked past the Emporium the other day while downtown. The owner and his wife have done a fantastic job restoring a historic building.

520 could have been routed thru downtown. The Gordon Hwy route comes to mind. Instead of going thru the swamp once it gets to Doug Barnard Pkwy, 520 could have hung a left and took the route of Doug Barnard, then turned right at Gordon Hwy, then simply followed Gordon Hwy/Hwy 1 thru downtown, over the river, into SC, and ended up at the top of the hill by the Nissan dealership where it is now. The only problem with this is that people in Olde Town probably would have complained about the noise.

A north-south interstate running from Savannah, to Augusta, and eventually Greenville would help greatly increase Augusta's exposure.

It and I14 was proposed by George W Bush, but no money was set aside for their construction. So, until someone convinces the decision makers to fund the project, then we won't see anything anytime soon.

Their is $340 million being invested in downtown in a 1 mile area. The amount will increase when several key developments start construction later this year. The $40 million Tee Center, $25 million Hyatt Place, 3 story commerical building, $10 million parking garage, start in June/July... The $5 million Holiday Inn Express starts in September..
