Aldi is NOTHING like Sam's or Costco. They sell in small quantities, even smaller than a regular grocery store. Often times, this is why they are less expensive. That said, they have the basics of just about everything. They are owned by the same parent company that owns Trader Joes and are a German company. The stores are very small (think the size of half of a Walgreen's) and generally have only one or two people working at the store at a time. You have to allow A Lot of extra time to get through a check-out at Aldi's. They are no frills - - have been bagless for ever (you have the option of purchasing re-usable plastic bags or paper bags for a small amount) and you even have to pay a deposit to rent a shopping cart (it's a quarter and you get it back if you return the cart to the right place). I do hope they come to Austin. I find the Austin area to be annoyingly over-run by HEB and any competition for them is a good thing. I don't see Whole Foods, Sprouts, or Central Market as competition to HEB b/c these stores appeal to a very different customer, one that usually has a lot of money.

Not exactly This commonly repeated internet meme is incorrect, due to bit of confusion that is very easy to make... <cue theme music for "Family Feud">

Aldi's in Europe consists of two separate companies, operated by different Albrecht brothers, who long ago had a family falling out over... IIRC... whether or not to sell tobacco in their stores, so they split into two different operations.

Trader Joe's is operated by Aldi Nord (North), which is led by Berthold and Theo Albrecht Jr., and operates 35 individual regional companies with about 2,500 stores in western, northern, and eastern Germany, as well as Denmark, France, the Benelux countries, the Iberian peninsula, and Poland.

Aldi's in the US is operated by Aldi Süd (South), which is led by Karl Albrecht, and operates 31 regional companies with 1,600 stores in western and southern Germany, as well as in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Switzerland, Australia, Austria, and Slovenia.

Interesting to me, both Trader Joe's and Aldi's, though quite different in many regards, and operated by different parent companies, seem to stir very similar passionate loyalties among their customers.

Be happy if you have either within reasonable shopping distance, as here on the Big Island we have neither.

Thanks for the info. I was told the they were the same and thought it was odd.

Interesting. I'd be surprised if they make it into the Austin city limit though, given how much a nightmare the permit processes are here.

Im surprised they are even locating in Pflugerville. Pflugerville has the highest property and school tax rates in the area. So they will be paying a premium tax to locate in Pflugerville, but maybe they are getting some tax breaks. All the other big companies are getting tax breaks to locate in Pflugerville, because the city knows that Austin and Round Rock would have cheaper rates. Also the Pflugerville water rates are the highest in the area.

How do you figure that? The city taxes are lower than Manor or Elgin, and the school taxes of all three are pennies apart.

Pflugerville is a very good retail commercial market with a significant amount of developable land and a shortage of grocery stores. Makes perfect sense to me!

Manor has 5K and Elgin has 8K populations. Pflugerville has over 50K. You need to compare major cities, not places out in the sticks. Pflugerville has maxed out its school tax rates and even the ESD rates. So by law, they can't increase those tax rates any more. The city credit rating has also been lowered, as the credit agency sees that Pflugerville has maxed out its credit card. The only saving grace is that the city keeps growing, but for some reason the growth rates cant seem to pay for the schools or emergency services. They keep asking for more money. The ESD has received 10% more revenue each year for the past 10 years, yet they still complain that they don't have enough money.

Since you were talking about competition for growth, I took that to mean the areas P'ville would grow towards - namely Elgin and Manor. Not going to grow any more to the west, so who cares?

Those "sticks" you disdain will soon be seamless.

Since you were talking about area competition for growth, seemed to make sense to look at the nearby competitors - namely Elgin and Manor. Those "sticks" you disdain will soon be seamlessly connected to you.
