Chuy's is just about the cheesy atmosphere, the Elvis thing and hubcabs and "sanitized for your protection" sealed silverware. Also, it used to be very cheap. The one thing I liked on the menu was the "big as yo face" burritos.

Two of them I can tell you about are Taqueria Arandas and La Tapatia. Short on atmosphere but big on flavor and portions. Dario's on E 6th is another one.

Well, they're out there, but I don't know if anyone would want to share their secret finds lest they be ruined by popularity. However, there's Taqueria Arandas on Burnet Road that might fit that bill for you. My husband says to warn you to expect LARGE portions.

I love Curra's on Oltorf. My husband loves Guerro's on S. Congress, but I'm sort of "eh" about it. I like the atmosphere better than Curra's, but not wild about the food (my cheese enchilada was all tortilla! And only a tiny bit of cheese!! Un-excusable in my book)

Guero's started out where Curra's is now. Then they got popular and moved to SoCo. They're prices went up, the service went to heck, and I don't know if their food is still any good because I had such bad service experiences there (multiple times) I won't go back. However, I still love Curra's!

For authentic Mexican (Tex Mex is an American creation) my order would be:

1. El Meson
2. Fonda San Miguel
3. Curra's

For Tex Mex:
1. Enchiladas y Mas
2. Casa Garcia's
3. Maudie's

For the uncategorizable it begins and ends with Polvo's.

For the best of the cheapest of the cheap: Aranda's.

Carolinajack, they're not in Austin, but in Georgetown, but Mariachis de Jalisco also might fit the bill for you. Especially for breakfast. I love their breakfast. I eat 3 times as much breakfast as I usually do when we go there, before I even know I've done it.
