Australians have opposite and varying views on this question. I personally would not travel to the US it would be near the bottom of my list after Africa and the middle east. Australia today is a class system with wide differences of income and wealth and is also comprised of many different european and asian nationalities so there will obviously be people who love the US and people who hate the US like I do
So why do you hate the US? Have you ever been to the US? If you have been somewhere and dislike it...OK. But to say you hate it without experiencing it...Seems foolish.
Becuase if you ahve not been here, you know that all Americans live in big houses or mansions, drive big cars, hate people of other races, are loud, can't cook a good meal, run on the beach, are mean to our spouse, think we are superior to any other group...
As an American, we know that all Australians have a pet kangaroo in the back, you spend all day at the beach sunbathing, then drinking, then have a barbie at night...
We know thata all New Zealanders are sheep farmers or were extras for the Lord of the Rings movies...
We know that all Africans live in a hut, without drinking water, wtih goats wandering around with lions waiting outside the thorn fence...
We know that all South Americans are drug lords, or super models or football players...
All Europeans have more class and culture than anywhere else in the world. That all things important - Fashion, politics, culture start there. They are peace loving people that welcome diversity...
OR those could all be stereotypes that movies, televison, music show us. I think you have to live in areas before you can judge...

Actually, a lot of pple I speak to here have told me they're not that interested in visiting the U.S but they ARE interested in seeing New Orleans. I have to break the news to them verrry gently...

I kind of dropped that one when I discovered that the Europeans were still into Michael Jackson well into the mid-90s long after we'd thoroughly concluded he was totally wacko.
As for film & tv that's actually pretty accurate in terms of showing typical middle class life here, I'd go with Office Space (save for the larceny bits and when a certain character goes nuts and does something pretty out there at the end).
I like you Augusta! We should be grateful rarch is not likely to cast their shadow on fine U.S soil, makes it less likely we'll run into him/her.
Thats your proud US nationalism answering . I would not cast a shadow I would shed a light. I notice that anyone who disagrees with your way the US way suddenly becomes bad or evil or a terrorist . That is conceited vanity
and delusion at its finest.
I'm not sure that I want her to like it that much... Surfer boys and shopping...That is a VERY dangerous combination
You'll be right mate. The shopping will be but a blip in your wallet with the Aussie dollar languishing against the greenback as it is AND once she's spoken to a few Aussie surfer boys she'll realize it's pot luck just like anywhere else.

Overt patriotism is annoying, but I don't think that should stop someone from wanting to visit a place. Like some others have mentioned overt Aussie patriotism can actually get rather obnoxious at times too.
