I realize that a lot of people feel that the '80's were a decade of crap when it comes to cars but, I happen to like a lot of vehicles from that era and surely others have some favorites of their own. My choice is quite easy, I purchased a new '86 Daytona Turbo Z 30 years ago this year that I still have. I loved that car from the first time I saw one and had to have it. The Z cars from Nissan as well as the Supra's and MR2's were fun cars from that era as well.
I actually liked all of the Chrysler/Shelby cars from back then as well as the Pontiac Fiero, Buick GN/ t-Type, Mustang SVO and the Turbo '89 Trans Am.
I'd have to agree, 80's cars were mostly crap or just plain ugly.
You know they did have unique looks. Current models do seem like turtles, as someone here wrote once in a similar thread. Performance models being the exception.
I never cared for it back in the day but now even a Dodge Diplomat would turn my head as a handsome vehicle. A neighbor has a well preserved late 80s white Caprice from the era and it is quite striking. That is until the most recent owner, a young kid recently put 20s or similar on it and ruined the look.
I never associate a cars reliability with how much I like it. My favorite car was a Saab 9-5 Turbo, but it was the most unreliable and expensive car I have ever owned. I love Land Rover too but I have had one of those before too and it was too expensive to fix when it did break.
As for the 80's, those cars definitely had character. I remember learning to drive stick on an 84 Nissan 200sx, my dad had an 87 300ZX Turbo, Ive had fox body Mustangs, a 1987 VW Golf GT...all awesome cars. I remember cruising in my buddies 1986 IROC Z which everyone drooled over. The SUV's of that time were awesome too, look at the Blazer,
4Runner, Bronco...all had removable hard tops. Cars and trucks definitely had there own categories and stereotypes unlike now where they are all blended together.
