Not so, grasshopper. Way back when, it was quite common to split the manifold on Chevy I-6 engines, for a true dual exhaust. Wealthy people bought custom headers, but us po'folks just cut the manifold, welded in a blocker plate, cut outlet ports, and welded on new exhaust flanges.
Then we would get glaspak mufflers, soak them with diesel fuel, set them up at about a 45 degree angle, and set them on fire. That burned all the fiberglass out, so they would really bark.
Some people put in a crossover so there was a tailpipe on each side, some ran both pipes out the same side.
