Ahhh, the overlooked V6. They power a great deal of cars (and trucks) on the road today, yet most people choose them for their smoothness, quietness, and combo of fuel efficiency and even performance. But stick a V6 in a pony/muscle car or truck and they become laughing stock because they don't sound right or are underpowered. Which brings me to this: name your best sounding V6 and worst sounding V6 (stock or modified exhaust, doesn't matter).

Best:

VQ35 (with stock exhaust) out of the 350Z/G35 - nice and rumbly engine sound with a smooth exhaust note

V6 (I forget its engine code) out of the old Acura NSX - delicious sounding

V6 from first gen Taurus SHO - higher pitched but sounded good throughout the entire rev range

Flat 6 from the 911 GT3 - exotic sounding almost

Inline 6 from the E39 M3

Worst:

VQ35 (straight piped) - what a horrible sound and a night and day difference from stock

3800 GM V6 - coarse and dull sounding

3.5L Mustang V6 - just no

GM 4.3L Vortec - probably the least inspiring engine note and exhaust sound in the history of mankind

Best sounding, the ones that have the factory exhaust thats quiet.

Worse ones, the ones who exhaust is loud, factory or not.

6 cylinder exhaust sound lol lol you can’t replace the sound of a muscle car on a V8 exhaust with a good set of headers on a 1970 Dodge Charger with a 426 Hemi. Or the Dodge Demon with a super charged 6.2 Hemi.

As a guy who tends to think nothing tops the sound of a healthy V8, I am impressed by the tone of the VQ35DE/VQ35HR and 3.7L versions. I like it so much I owned one for a while.

The Challenger SXT has a true dual exhaust and sounds pretty good for a V6, but my 5.0 V8 F150 sounds better even with the stock single exhaust. I once drove a 1970 Nova (that was for sale) with a 250 ci I6, that had headers and a dual exhaust with Flowmasters. That was the closest I have heard to a V8 in a 6. You can get just about anything at Summit Racing.

Even better with a Borla dual exhaust.

It was not true dual exhaust it had a y at the manifold to make it look like a dual exhaust you know a I 6 is a straight 6 right only a V6 can be a true dual exhaust.
