Carney's dead pan response to mention of Diego Garcia at the WH press conference seemed odd.
Ya know, it really irked me yesterday when CNN finally decided to briefly acknowledge some of the other "theories" out there. It was almost as though they were all brushing them off as ridiculous, yet NONE of those "experts" have offered any conclusive facts or information to help find this plane, but they keep talking and talking and talking.
It may have been said already in this 133 page thread but why would someone like Iran or Pakistan want this plane to use as a weapon? Don't they have their own planes?

Yes, both Iran and Pakistan has it's own flag carrier - Iran Air has 747s, Pakistan Airlines (PIA) has 777's. Owned by the government. Register that theory along with the UFO, alternative dimension, and "Bermuda triangle"-type theories for likeliness.
I wonder how extensively the area near the Maldives has been searched at this point? I do think this is the strongest lead right now (at least, that the public has been informed of by investigators), based on the people who saw a low-flying plane there.
Back on the subject of going to 45,00 feet. If it were true that was done to depressurize the cabin, aren't there automatic systems that drop down air masks when that happens ? We all seen movies where when some major failure happens in a plane all those masks drop down on hoses in front of each passenger's face. Or is that something the pilots control and can shut off ?
The whereabouts of the black box, in a crash scenario, is the only missing link to me. To find this plane, the black box must be found. No trace. The only way that thing isn't detectable is if the aircraft is far, far below the surface of the water, and to be there, my theory of it water landing, then sinking rapidly with a very low fuel tank is the only answer.
There might come a time in the near future, when this plane will just have to be classified as lost. Search efforts ended. Sea-bottom mapping tools will be the only possible way to find it.
I've been reading this thread because you guys ask the best questions, and come up with interesting sources. As you've probably noticed, the topic has dropped off the Google News headlines for the moment...
Even so, there are interesting developments. Now the Malaysians are discounting the Maldives observations, saying they were "untrue." But last night I read in some semi-reputable overview (CNN, possibly, can't find it now) that a Maldives landing strip was programmed into the pilot's flight simulator, among other landing strips. That in itself is not suspicious, but combined with other factoids/rumors it becomes interesting. Besides, some files were apparently deleted from the flight simulator.
"Simul-posting" (simultaneous ) about the discounting of the Maldives observations. Sorry about that. But I actually don't trust anything Malaysian authorities are saying any longer.

Don
Pilots do have the ability to control the pressurization system of most airliners (i'm not sure what control they have in the 777, but someone might be able to explain). Our systems had some limits, however those could be overridden for specific situations.
There are oxygen masks that drop from the back of the airplane. The masks are connected to an O2 Generator (i.e. a chemical reaction in a tube that looks like a flashbang) and the flow of O2 is started when you pull the mask down towards you and remove the pin. The flow is constant, but only last ~12-15 minutes (more than enough time to get the plane to a lower altitude).
There are also fire hoods in the cabin that provide O2 for flight attendants needing to fight a fire, along with portable oxygen bottles for the flight attendants to use if they need to walk about the cabin during a depressurization event.
