You still think if that is what happened, the plane would be in "one piece"?
That is highly unlikely.
Bob.
What I'm saying might be possible is that someone descended and flew the plane into the water at a slower (typical landing) speed.

If the plane fell from cruising altitude or exploded at cruising altitude, then there'd likely be scattered debris.

While I was out driving today I listened to a show about this on NPR. They had a panel of experts and even they had nothing concrete to offer about what could have happened. Basically, they said we won't know until we know.

But callers were tossing out all kinds of theories, from black holes, space ships, terrorists, hijacking, etc.

Malaysian Flight 370 was last detected flying over a small island hundreds of miles from the flight's usual route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, according to a senior Malaysian Air Force official. The official declined to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

If the new data is correct, the aircraft was flying in the opposite direction from its scheduled destination and was on the opposite side of the Malay Peninsula from its scheduled route. Previous accounts had the aircraft losing touch with air traffic control near the coast of Vietnam.
"Last detected"? When was that? The plane would have run out of fuel long ago. Why has there been no follow-up to this news? If true, this would be huge.

One of the most eerie rumors came after a few relatives said they were able to call the cellphones of their loved ones or find them on a Chinese instant messenger service called QQ that indicated that their phones were still somehow online.

A migrant worker in the room said that several other workers from his company were on the plane, including his brother-in-law. Among them, the QQ accounts of three still showed that they were online, he said Sunday afternoon.

Adding to the mystery, other relatives in the room said that when they dialed some passengers’ numbers, they seemed to get ringing tones on the other side even though the calls were not picked up.

The phantom calls triggered a new level of desperation and anger for some. They tried repeatedly Sunday and Monday to ask airline and police officials about the ringing calls and QQ accounts. However unlikely it was, many thought the phones might still be on, and that if authorities just tracked them down, their relatives might be found. But they were largely ignored.

According to Singapore’s Strait Times, a Malaysia Airlines official, Hugh Dunleavy, told families that the company had tried calling mobile phones of crew members as well and that they had also rang. The company turned over those phone numbers to Chinese authorities.

Plane probably was landed at some remote airfield and the passengers are being held

Why would a plane do this, if something were wrong? They weren't heading toward Kuala Lumpur. Could the pilots have become disoriented? If they become incapacitated after the turn (assuming this story is correct) how far could the plane have gone on the fuel it had? (Although you'd think it would have been picked up by radar again at some point).

How many "remote airfields" are out there that can accommodate the landing of a plane that size--at night no less?

The plane would not get picked up by radar if the pilots or someone else turned off the transponders.
It's either a complete power failure (unlikely)...or someone turned off all communication.

If pilots were incapacitated, then why will plane turn its course on Auto-Pilot and go on the other side of Malaysia? It would have continued on its path to Beijing and crash somewhere on the path. If passengers were alive that time when plane was flying over Malacca strait, they would have raised hue and cry as they would have known that they are going somewhere else.

If the terrorist hijackers were motivated and smart enough to take control of the aircraft without a distress call, disable the transponders, and fly it through radar blind spots to a secret location, wouldn't they be smart enough to disable/destroy these cell phones? Even terrorists living in caves are keenly aware that cell phones can be used to track and locate you.

But how would they have known that the plane was diverting from its normal route? Even if they were looking out the windows, it might be hard to realize that things weren't right. I think people on planes just assume that things are going as they should.
