Perhaps it is a matter of perception. I recall watching the 1979 World Series which was on ABC at the time, and announcer Howard Cosell becoming utterly obssessed with the death of Pirate's manager Chuck Tanner's mother. It seemed like if there was any remote connection in any situation, Cosell would work in a reference to how Tanner was soldeiring along despite the heartbreak of losing his mother just before the Series. Cosell was so gripped by this business that it became a joke among me and the friends with whom I was watching the games, by the third game we had turned it into a drinking game. For years afterward we would satrize Cosell's performance..."Be there at six o'clock? Oh! Six feet under, that's Chuck Tanner's Mom, she won't be arriving anywhere at six because she was so cruelly ripped from the Tanner family just before..."....that sort of thing.

But you know what? With but a couple of exceptions, when I have talked to other people who watched that series, none of them seem to recall Cosell going on and on about Tanner's mother.

I watched the game last night and didn't feel overwhelmed by the announcer's comments on Rivera. He merits praise, he got it, but it didn't seem like anything out of the ordinary to me.

Perceptions...

Ogling him like a school girl for an entire inning. isn't.

And as for announcers praising guys on my team, I've gotten rather tired of hearing about Halladay-Oswalt-Hamels.
I'm not a Philly fan but that is one hell of a 1-2-3 punch!

In his post-season career, Mariano has 41 Saves and 5 Blown Saves. That's about average for a major league closer. Especially since he never has to pitch against the Yankees. By all accounts, though, he is a decent human being, which says something.

Personally, I'm rooting for the Yankees to sweep the next series, too, to get the bastards off prime time TV as quickly as possible. It would be unendurable if they had to play the full 19 games, with all the camera shots of them gloating in the dugout, and multiple replays of every infield hit and seed-spit, and the announcers kissing their asses. Concede the World Series, to them, as long as we don't have to watch.

The only weakness the Yankees have is "Fatbathia"

Their most valuable pitcher is their only weakness? That seems odd...

The 8 - 1, .072 ERA, 2 home runs allowed in 136 innings, 1.4 BB/9 and 7.1 K/9 aren't very average

I'm sorry if I was a yanks fan I wouldn't trust him enough to be a number 1 pitcher. He is too inconsistent. He was just lucky enough the yankees had the offense to erase that 0-4 hole

Yankees averaged over 5 runs per game this season. It wasn't lucky that they scored 5, it was likely.

Can you do me a favor and name a few consistent starters for me
