How can you say it's a monopoly? There are other sports and baseball is not a necessity. Also, there is not just one team that every player wants to go to.
True, the major market teams didnt make the rules, they just abide by them, so Im not mad at the teams themselves...
But the difference is, if a major market team makes a mistake on a player, whether home grown or whatever, you simply replace the player--money is not an object. But when a small market team makes a mistake on a player, you simply cant go out and 'buy' more quality. Miss on a prospect in KC, and you are doomed for years possibly. Miss on a prospect in Boston, big deal, I'll just sign Carl Crawford...

One thing people forget: All the owners are millionaires and billionaires. They can buy whoever they want but the teams that don't make as much are not so gung ho in doing it. Yes, the Yankees, Boston, Philly, etc... do it a little more often but the other teams can do it just as easily if they choose to.

Not every team can just go out and buy players ...are you serious?

ALL the teams can go out and buy anyone they like. Whether the player is willing to go to a certain destination is a different story. What do you think the Nats were doing this offseason. They offered everyone $$$. Werth was one of the guys that decided to bite. Yes, the Pirates, Padres, and everyone else can too, but they choose not to. Let me say it again, all these billionaire owners have the capability to buy ANY player that is available but alot choose not to. No one is out of reach of any owner. There is not one team in baseball that can't afford to add a $20-30 million a year player but alot of them stick to specific budgets and choose not to add. There is no other reason.
Why would a team want to sign a $20-$30 million player and not have any money to fill out the rest of the roster?
The Tampa Bay Rays generated $156M in revenue in 2009. That is less than the Yankees payroll. The Yankees payroll was $240M (They generated $441M). Where do the Rays make up that difference?
(Forbes, 2009 for the figures)
And dont say the owner...what owner pays players out of pocket? That's bad business. The fact owners make millions and billions is irrelevant...a big market owner doesnt pay players with his millions, he has the revenue.

This is what I was going to say.
What good business man is going to own a business that loses money every year?

Were the Yankee teams of the mid to late 80's as successful of a franchise as they are now? No, they were not. Now they are consistently contending for the division and generating more revenue. Consistent winning and contending generates more $$$ than a loser. So spending $20 million on a player might put a team over the hump for a while even though there are no guarantees.
In most cases, yes it is. Have any team sign Pujols and see what happens.
