I live and work overseas, and have been offered a job at Edwards AFB, but have read all the blogs about living in the communities around tha base, and they don't look promising. The area that seems the best out of all the replies so far seems to Tehachapi. My main concern like most is security not only for my family, but also also as an investment for real estate? I'd like to know what the climate is like for race relations, from the blogs, it seems not too friendly, for minorities? That would be good to know before relocating.

As long as you are white and of the right religion, you should not have any problems in Tehachapi. Believe it or not California City seems somewhat diverse with more blacks (12%) than many other East Kern county communities, Hispanics are pretty much everywhere in Southern California with a 17% average in the area. You also find plenty of little gang banger families living in and around Tehachapi; while they’re loved ones serve out their time at the state prison.

If you are looking for the rudest drivers and store merchants in Kern County; Tehachapi can't be beat for the snobbery! Especially back in Bear Valley & Stallion Springs where neighbors will get into your business for just about anything from the kind trees you plant, to the way you landscape your land and even the color of drape you hang in your windows can get you put on the ignore list with your neighbors, or they will turn you into the drape police where they will site you with a fine, and order you to change whatever they don't like about your house. And God forbid you breakdown on the side of the road on your way to town; you can count on endless people flipping you off and swearing at you and your kids while blasting their horns as they blow by you while you wait for a tow.

If you have children; be extra careful with them around the schools, we regularly clocked people using our radar gun doing 60MPH daily on Park Rd, right in front of Golden Hills elementary school as children were dodging in and out of cars in front of the school. Crime wise; According to a Sheriff that has lived in Tehachapi for years, Meth has a good foothold on place and most of Kern County. Tehachapi looks like a kind of town where you can let your guard down and your kids will be safe, but as those who have been victimized by the criminal set will tell you; It could be your biggest mistake!

Before you make an investment in real estate they’re, rent first so you can get a better handle on the place and see if you like it before you commit. And if you buy property in the Golden Hills area, do a double check to see if the land perks. Do Not Take a Realtors word for it! Many buyers have made that big and costly mistake of taking the Realtors word for it. If renting, avoid 4 Seasons Reality in Tehachapi. They are one of the areas premier slumlords and will put you through hell trying to get things fixed; getting your deposit is another hassle. If renting it's also a good ideal to do a credit check on your potential landlord; just to make sure it’s really their place to rent and it's not headed into foreclosure. Take lots of pictures before you move in and move out of a place you rent, it helps to get your money back when you go to court. Tehachapi landlords and realtor's tend to be like Arizona used car salesman when it comes to honesty; One Tehachapi landlord tried to hold back a $600 deposit from a renter over two three year old light bulbs.

If you are concerned about race relations, and are going to work at Edwards AFB, California City is closest to the base and you might still be able to get property cheap with the mass meltdown in the high desert.

That whole post made me laugh.

Anyone who doesn't know the area can read that post and just know for fact... that Tehachapi is the polar opposite of everything they said.

If you are coming from the California coast or central valley, Tehachapi has very long winters, with it snowing as late as May; if you are coming from Alaska then Tehachapi winters may seem short.

Save-Mart the grocery store was shot down because it turns out the rodents enjoy the high prices too. Albertsons the other store is very high too; plan on driving to Lancaster, where Stator Brothers, Wal-Mart,WinCo and Costco are located.

If you like ice cold snobs, Tehachapi is the place to be!

Default Demographic puzzle

In researching Tehachapi and reading these forums have come across widely conflicting opinions and numbers.First-69% males? If so,would think that husband hunting women would have flocked to the area.Next-the ethnic makeup.Raw numbers indicate a very large minority population, with non Hispanic whites barely half the population.Last-the crime rate.In checking several web sites a few indicate a very high crime rate, and a few low crime rates, and a few more give no numbers at all(this site, for example).Think that I know the answers, but would like confirmation from locals and/or those that know the area well. The prison is the logical source of the odd numbers. If you add 5000 guys in the clink to the general area stats,it sure would twist things.Prisons have a disproportionate numbers of minorities, and if all the murders and assaults that take place in prisons are factored in,can understand the inflated crime figs.Comments?

i dont care where u come from, tehachapi does not have long winters, snow in may? almost never, snow in april? maybe on average every few years. and on top of that, a normal year it might snow only 4 to 6 times with the snow melting in a few days, now that is in the main town around 4000 feet, of coarse if you go higher in the mountains a little more snow and it might stick a little longer. i just cant believe the nerve to say "long winters", .......not even close, what a dumby

The only thing remotely true about KNJO's long-winded post above is that 4-Season's Realty is a bunch of crooks. If you are -- by some unfortunate circumstances -- forced to rent from them, you MUST photo-document the entire place from front door to back, floor to ceiling, making notations about each dent or scrape in drywall, cabinet, and floor surface.

The rest of the post is drivel from a Negative Nancy. I would LOVE to know all the places this person has previously lived, for what lengths of time, and hear what they had to say about those locales.
