Pattern is pretty active for the end of May.

North of 36 N latitude the forecast now calls for chance of rain on Wednesday with much colder than normal temperatures.

Another system looks to hit "somewhere" in the state Memorial Day Weekend. This far out it could merely graze the northern-most counties or could be a direct hit in the middle of the state.

Taking bets regarding whether or not we'll have a Year Without Summer (e.g. without a normal summer for each respective area).

Some people were calling last year a year without a summer, in SoCal.

Hopefully it will be another mild summer. With MWD robbing us blind for the cost of water, I almost hate to see hot weather any more.

Bad Bad Bad thinking for California people. Without the hot weather this state will be in big trouble Agriculturally. Seeing as how California has the largest Agricultural economy in the world and the most diverse of any state in the US. Hot summers are what give California its Mediterranean climate. A bad summer in California could send agricultural product prices through the roof around the globe. Don't even wish for a thing like that.

They're already through the roof, for one, and for two I'm not sure which crop other than wine grapes need very hot temps to grow

Then you have not a clue about California Central Valley agriculture. The Cornucopia to the world.

Grapes turn out differently in different climates. Hotter areas produce sweeter grapes. Wine grapes aren't grown for their sweetness, thus you will find them in areas with cool summers. But generally, if the days are above 85F most varieties will produce ok. It just takes longer for them to ripen and what is more important is having hot days during the end of summer when they are laid out to dry for raisin production. In California the variety "Thompson's Seedless" is the dominant raisin grape, and is likely to be the green grapes you see in the grocers.

Most people like sweet Apricots. They need warmer weather earlier in the season. They tend to ripen at the end of May and early June. That isn't going to happen this year and they are going to be a little tart, which I'm OK with because that is my preference in fruit. The peaches will be ok, but will take longer to ripen. In Kings, Tulare and Kern Counties there are a lot of crops that are grown there that require hotter weather. Corn, cantelopes and watermelons are among them. Without hot weather watermelons end up tasting like water.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND IS SHAPING UP TO BE UNSEASONABLY COOL WITH BREEZY CONDITIONS.
AN UPPER LOW WILL DEVELOP OVER THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST AND WILL SWING SSE INTO CENTRAL
CA BY SUNDAY MORNING. TEMPS
ALOFT WILL BE VERY COLD FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR...WITH 500 MB TEMPS
DROPPING AS LOW AS -25C OVER SAN FRANCISCO BY 12Z SUNDAY MORNING PER
THE ECMWF. IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE QUITE UNSTABLE...HOWEVER MOISTURE
LOOKS TO BE LACKING SO HAVE NOT MENTIONED SHOWERS IN THE FCST. TEMPS
OVER THE WEEKEND COULD BE AS MUCH AS 20 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL INLAND
ALONG WITH THE BREEZY CONDITIONS. AS THIS UPPER LOW PULLS OUT MEDIUM
RANGE MODELS ARE DROPPING ANOTHER UPPER LOW ALONG THE COAST NEXT
TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY. IF THIS SOLUTION CONTINUES THERE COULD BE
SOME SHOWER ACTIVITY FOR THE BEGINNING OF JUNE ALONG WITH WELL BELOW
NORMAL TEMPS. WILL BE INTERESTING TO SEE IF FUTURE MODEL RUNS
CONTINUE THIS UN-SPRING LIKE WEATHER FOR THE DISTRICT.

================================================== ====

This is a bad deal for ag.

It is going to be warming up where I am. But we have had some pretty nice weather recently I have to admit. In regards to the hot weather helping the agriculture in CA that is true but with the hotter weather it will be tough for the state's residents to be active outside. Even waiting for a bus when it is 95 degrees for example will cause you to sweat even at low humidity.

Most agriculture should be fine. 80 degrees is every bit as effective as 100 degrees where most stuff is grown. The only real change would be a slightly lessened demand for water.
