We all know what's happened to unions. If more people were unionized, do you think it would benefit lower wage earners? Would it provide service sector employees with a sustainable standard of living?

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner!

A great many people in our society cannot wrap their heads around this reality. It ain't 1954 anymore. Not even 1984. Times have-a-changed, like it or not. Adapting is strangely absent the human condition, especially in the good ol' USA. And surrounding oneself with all manner of doodads, gizmos, widgets, and tomfoolery while blithely rolling up impossible debts in doing so is to simply mask the problem with shallow appeasements, much like taking drugs and booze to wash away the pain of facing circumstances. We do this with breathtakingly greater efficiency with every next generation.

Why does the Federal governmnent have to get involved in hourly wage? Let the private industry dictate wage. The only glich would be huge companies like Wal mart dictating wage rates, but Wal Mart should have been broken up into smaller companies long ago by anti trust laws.

Think you just answered your own question. It's quite a "glitch".

so....live outside of LA county and work in LA? Do you realize how much that would cost to commute?

Some people just don't think logically. Good grief.

Well stated. And that's exactly what's happened in America for the last 35 years....We've been in denial about the actual lifestyles we can afford and trying to mask our unrealistic expectations with debt (citizens & government alike). 2008 woke some people up to that reality, but it seems like when the economy picks up even a little bit, people go right back to the habits that got them in trouble in the first place.

Ummm, yea, Are you new here? Do you realize hundreds of thousands of people do this and they do it every single day? Remember, LA county stretches all the way to Long Beach.

Not really going in circles, you just arent acknowledging my points. Teens are just one component. The key is that people in min wage jobs have an avenue for advancing.

37% of the national labor force is not working.

Correction: 37% of the population is not in the labor force. That's completely different than 37% of the labor force not working. Many people are voluntarily not in the labor force.
