Happiness indicators include people walking around with a smile, there is less road rage, etc.

Its CA, hardly anyone walks around with a smile and most people look at you with a puzzled look if you smile or God forbid try to engage them in conversation. Ive been to 34 states and I would say CA is arguably the least friendly. Off that list I would say "other" and choose the Palm Springs area, followed by Murrieta and then Yucaipa.

Interesting. I would say I have the opposite experience to what mbell has felt. I smile a lot. I see lots of smiles in return. I get cheerful "hallo's!" from young and old, well dressed and homeless alike. Constantly.

I think the place that these people find happiness, is in their hearts

In any graveyard.

I have never heard anything unhappily spoken in any graveyard I have ever visited. Not by the residents, anyway

Exactly, TM.

A habit I picked up from the year I lived in Tupelo. Waving. Southerners wave at everyone for no reason in particular, except to acknowledge them. Nowadays, when I walk or drive through town, I wave at everyone. A surprising (to me) number wave back. Nice!

I've found happy people wherever I've lived. But, I think the folk up here in Del Norte County are by and large content.

I've only lived in north CA. Of the places I've lived - SF Bay Area, Sacramento/Davis/Woodland, Folsom, Redding and Del Norte Counties - I'd say the city of Davis and Del Norte County have the happiest people of any of these places I've lived. They seem to be content with their lives and like where they live.

The SF Bay Area is full of people in a hurry and full of frustration from the traffic and the pace of life. Even there, though, there are plenty of friendly people. Redding has a high number of unhappy people.

And it seems like anyone in the marijuana culture seems to complain a lot about government. They seem to be less content, and are by and large people who are angry and complaining a lot about laws and government, etc. Not saying they are right or wrong, just saying they aren't happy with life, overall, from my observation.

Davis is full of pretty contented people, but they do tend to be a tad snooty. My favorite place so far is where I've recently landed in Del Norte Pole County. Contented, down to earth people, and friendly to boot, from what I've seen so far.

Los Feliz is the obvious answer.

Funny, I've found CA to be the most friendly, and ready to shoot the breeze. My "other" on the list was the East Bay.
