Never thought of that. I guess Boise has better beach access than Pasadena. Reminds me of a poster that said dallas was the best town for skiing because it was a two hour flight to denver

But I drive to Riverside and it's $615k median. Even Bakersfield is $375k, higher than Houston or Dallas.
California is very urbanized and full of sprawl spreading out everywhere, which means not many rural cities that can be had for cheap

Oh yeah, because you can walk out your door in Boise at 10 and be at Laguna Beach at 11:30.

Dream on.

You still have to arrive in John Wayne airport, land, rent a car, get your bags etc.

That’s a 4+ hour process if you include security.

If you’re going to do that why not fly Boise to Cabo or Costa Rica? Go snorkel some coral reefs or surf in 80 degree water instead of walking through a trash covered beach to go swimming in 66 degree water in August.

OK, I am willing to mock someone who says the OC beaches are 1.5 hours from Boise, but it's also not true that they are covered with trash. The water may be cold, but almost all the beaches are very clean.

Security is a breeze in Boise. 15 min max from parking lot to gate. If I have someone pick me up at John Wayne and drive straight to Newport Beach I could do it in 2 or 21/2 hour. I like your idea about Cabo though I always have a blast there.

I was in HB in September and there were oil streaks in the sand and trash everywhere. Laguna beach and south county beaches less so but there’s a lot of foot traffic and lazy people throw their garbage everywhere. It’s worse after holidays or busy weekends.

The ocean isn’t all that clean in southern CA either. Particularly after rain. In NorCal I can surf pretty much anytime after all but maybe the first rain of the season. In SoCal people sometimes get really sick or hospitalized from doing so after any substantial rain.

Yuma is one of the last places I can think of in the U.S. that I'd want to live (and I have been there).

And yet, when you're called out for nonsense like this Finper, you claim everyone is so critical of you

Florida or North Carolina would be in this posters budget and probably better options.

Yes much of those areas in those areas of CA are around the numbers I stated.
Way to reduce things to the ridiculous to try and make your comment more palatable by throwing out areas like Barstow or claiming areas are hot and dusty if you don't live directly in a city (sorry, it's not). Not everyone needs to live next to a beach either (I can't believe we're back to that nonsense). CA4Now mentioned Fullerton. I have friends that live in Folsom. There are plenty of safe, nice neighborhoods that don't go for the $800k amount you listed. And what amenities are we talking about? All these areas have clothing and groceries stores, spas, restaurants, etc. Yeah there might not be 3 star rated Michelin restaurants but those aren't the places most people frequent much anyway. Same goes for things like the opera/symphony or art galleries. Personally, I'd rather not deal with the hustle and bustle of a city and am quite comfortable living a little distance away. Jobs haven't been much of a problem in that respect either (not to mention that many companies still have WFH) so it's not like you have to be right next door to a major metropolis. Hell, when I lived in the Bay Area I lived just over 10 minutes away from the beach and probably went there one time every 10 years. And once I stopped working in the city, I really didn't head out there very often. There was no need as I could get everything I needed in the suburbs. And typically, the closer you are to a city, the less you get for your money in regards to housing.
