Any idea if the high price is just for January month or it's going to continue like this?

Same here. 98% higher to be exact. Rounding, it was $500 instead of $250.

I think mine doubled over the previous month, but it's never very high and therefore I don't pay close attention.

My February bill is higher than the January bill, and both are astronomical, compared to what I use to pay.
If this keeps up, I may convert to electric.

Wait till you see what that will cost. Older homes will need a fix to patch panels. Depending on your layout you may be tearing up walls and floors to do the installation.

It can be a simple $100 electric oil heater placed in a bedroom.

How is that possible in SoCal?! I'm in Idaho where temps got down to single digits last billing cycle, and ours was $140. Our house is 3200 sq ft and we keep the thermostat at 70F.

We had a historic artic blast of cold weather this winter. Who knows how much of the increased heating cost is due to gas prices vs. unusually high useage. CD membert "Kettlepot" upthread mentioned a 30% increase in cost with no increase in usage.

Every utility is different. Maybe So Cal Edison has had higher increases or maybe some place in So Cal did not experince prolonged cold snaps.

The greater point is, we are in an energy shortage and all energy prices are soaring due to lack of production, for various reasons, often political rather than market driven.

That's what we use. It's going to be more than you think as far as the bill. They are talking "climate credits" which will be pennies on the dollar. We are getting screwed in every which way in this State now. Rebates? Credits? Everyone should be fuming about this.

Oh, it's going to go FAR beyond rebates and credits.

I foresee climate lockdowns - reminiscent of covid lockdowns. Remember? Two weeks to flatten the curve?

Only this time, it'll be under the guise of adhering to carbon emission quotas.

CA will lead the charge in saving the planet from the existential climate crisis with our benevolent overlord, Herr Gruesom, invoking emergency climate crisis powers to lock citizens down.

Since we, the sheeple, were so easy duped during the China Bug crisis into trusting his...guidance, we'll bleat in obedience to stay at home mandates and power shut downs across homes, schools, businesses, so that CA doesn't exceed CO2 limits set by...yup...the state.
