Hi everybody,
I am moving from NJ to CA. I will be working as a pharmacist and I have a list of locations I need to pick from. I am a single female in my late-20's.
Some factors I am considering:
1. I enjoy suburban/urban atmosphere. NO rural.
2. Safety, a very important factor
3. I like to have a good time. I enjoy going out during the weekends. Some nightlife would be appreciated. I also enjoy shopping malls.
4. Diversity (I am asian)
5. Close to a city (~2+ hrs ok)
I prefer living near LA due to proximity friends but I know I do not have much choice.

The following are the locations:
San Luis Obispo,
Arroyo Grande,
Greenfield,
King City,
Livingstone,
Merced,
Oakhurst,
Mariposa,
Sanger,
Selma,
Madera,
Kerman,
Ridgecrest,
Mammoth Lakes,
Lake Isabella,
Calexico,
Brawley,
Visalia,
Tulare

I greatly appreciate all the help!!

Of your list, the only cities I would consider personally are San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande. But that's just me.

there 2 are my top choices as well. I also considered cities near fresno because from what I researched, it seems like a big city.

How does SLO compare with Arroyo Grande in terms of cost of living? It seems like SLO has a bigger population as well? Pro's and Con's?

Thanks!!

I agree with San Luis Obispo.

Mammoth Lakes would be cool, but probably too rural for you.

Your list is a lot of smaller towns, the largest is probably Visalia at 100,000 people. Nearly all are agricultural based.

Some of the areas are nice like Mariposa and Oakhurst but they are small foothill towns that would probably not match what you are describing.

Besides SLO/Arroyo Grande I'd probably add as the closest choices to your criteria:
Visalia/Tulare (but live in Visalia for either since they are only 15 minutes apart)
or
Sanger/Selma/Madera/Kerman (but look at living in Fresno/Clovis and commuting the 15 to 30 minute drive to those cities)

SLO is gorgeous, believe me. I live in Los Osos, which is a 15 minute drive from SLO on the beach. It's a laid back kind of town filled with idiot college students but you get used to that Night life is good, lots of bars, theatres, restaurants etc. but no big 'clubs' (and no, The Grad doesn't count as a club). As for shopping, we have shopping centers but no mall (thank goodness) and a downtown full of wonderful little stores.

What can you afford? SLO is expensive and jobs can be hard to find...

Expensive is true, but I think the OP already has identified the job opening.

San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande, Visalia, or Ridgecrest. Arroyo Grande is probably best.
