just talked to a friend in ABQ, the average salary for a 1 year cop in ABQ is about $45,000 if they have a bach degree, less otherwise. This is including insentives for signing on. So, I am wrong and so is nevergoingback. By the way, these salaries are based on new pay scales starting in June of this year.

Or, lets put it this way, if what you have read is true than the ABQ cops are not telling it the way it is.

This pay scale starts one year after graduation from the Academy.
$23.15 / hour OR *
base salary of $48152.00 / year

This is straight from their website. Tack on another $1600 with a BA. Maybe who you are talking to is telling you take home pay. You can enroll in an overtime program for $32/hr on top of your salary. Tons of bennies on top of all of this. Looks like ABQ is attempting to keep up with CA, LOL. Not sure if that is good thing.

I personally know a cop in LA county, makes 100K + for sure without a doubt.

Not a good thing for me, wanting to move away from bloated public employee high taxes California, to NM. I'm trying to get away from this.

Well, we are all entitled to our opinion and seems we have certainly exercised that right.

To wrap up my input I will reiterate: I for one respect and appreciate our Law Enforcement Officers (LEOs), firmly believe they can't be OVER PAID for what they do. Having said that, I do recognize that there are cities, counties and states that might not be able to afford to pay them what they are worth. That means those seeking a career in LE at those locations have to choose to accept what is offered to them or move, just like in any other career path.

I do believe that times are changing, for the better. I agree with nmnita that now days more and more LEOs have college degrees, not always in CJ, might be in BA, Nursing or whatever.

The way I see this thread is.... Lovehound, nevergoingback or City Boy will never change my mind NOR would they change mine or some other minds, so, I for one will try to stick by a....
AGREE to DISAGREE for the sake of civility.... on line.

So you would endorse paying our police officers a salary of $1 million per year, each?

Easy for you to say, in the Phillipines, safe from paying California taxes. What are police officers paid in the Philippines?

Curmudgeon,

Thanks for your service as a LEO. I know many LEOs that retired and their story is just like yours. However, there are many that share a different story. Can't say that I know any that share your feelings about being over compensated, but, maybe there are.

Best to you and yours.... Stay Safe!

Dallas PD pays $41,690 to rookies and $64,651 to officers with 10 years of experience, before overtime, special pay or benefits.

San Diego PD pays $50,172 ... 60,588 for "Police Officer I" and $64,008 ... 77,376 for "Police Officer II".

Of course, cost of living in San Diego is sufficiently higher to justify the 20% difference in wages.

"Beginning Annual Salary" in Minneapolis is $45,539 to $50,207.

If I had to choose between working in SDPD for 50K and working in Oakland PD for 70K, I'd choose San Diego. Money is no use to me if I'm dead.
