It's not so much a matter of "good" and "bad" by any clear and objective criteria, but more a matter of personal preference. Some people don't like the sustained heat of the northern Sacramento Valley in summer. Others will point out that it's no worse than many other western cities, and better than quite a few, e.g., Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, El Paso, etc. Some people don't like the coastal chill and fog that can affect Bay Area cities, though Santa Rosa's climate is generally mild and sunny by Bay Area standards. The winter tule fog in the valley is something to consider with regard to Chico as well. The cost of living in Chico is lower than SR, but the salary-to-COL quotient is probably lower as well. Jobs will be harder to find in either place, but hard to find in Chico even when times are good. Santa Rosa is smack in the middle of a lot of interesting places to visit; Chico is a bit more isolated and by many accounts, the only really interesting place in the northern Sac Valley. Both places offer access to good locally-grown food and good outdoor recreation. A few comparisons:

Chico

1. Bidwell Park is fabulous
2. Almost 300 sunny days a year
3. Cal State Chico (both good and bad aspects)
4. Thriving downtown area
5. Affordable real estate with larger lot sizes
6. More seasonal definition with better spring and autumn weather than SR
7. Bicycle friendly infrastructure

Santa Rosa

1. Relatively close access to the coast
2. Better winter weather than the valley
3. Better summer weather than the valley
4. Close to Bay Area attractions
5. Rural Sonoma County is much more scenic than rural Butte County

How old are you? Are you planning on attending college? Do you have children?
Where are you from or currently now living? If I knew these details I think I could get a better idea of what you consider good and bad.
