Yes... for now.

Part of moving the effective date out a year is so the Federal Government has time to come on board... as California goes... so goes the nation

You can go to another state to buy whatever you want. If i lived near nv, az or or i would surely buy most of my stuff their to avoid paying the high ca sales tax. I know by ca law at tax time you must pay the diff in state sales tax but i just wont report it. Screw them!

I was wondering how long it'd take for someone to blame Obama for a state decision.

The older style units aren't made anymore because they won't meet building codes.

People seem to think that no other appliances have gone through this same process. Standards change and manufacturers update their product lines to meet those new standards. It's happened in the A/C industry, the dishwasher industry, the refrigerator industry, the washer/dryer industry, the toilet industry, the shower head industry, etc, etc, etc, etc. I don't think Home Depot started moving out of CA because of it. There wasn't a backlash when the standards changed for any of those products. Why the backlash for TV's?

CA has always been progressive with energy efficiency and environmental issues. What's the big deal? Or is this just another opportunity to for some people to use the "socialist" propaganda buzzword that has become so popular these days?

I said people running the older appliances. As in, they haven't upgraded, and are not running efficient models, therefore they are consuming WAY more energy than some TV in the corner. It's silly.

If your air conditioner was installed in the 80's/90's and you never upgraded it, I guarantee you that if you were running it once a day - heat or cold - for a whole year, it would consume at least 10 times the energy that today's LCD would in nonstop operation. Do you know why? Because TVs do spike energy when they're first turned on, but when they're left on the consumption is not that much compared to larger appliances in the kitchen or the A/C. That's why I say it's silly to target TVs when the fact of the matter is that the problem lies with general energy efficiency. Some people have no concept of it in their households, what with 100 watt bulbs and tons of lights in the yard, and Christmas lighting. Do you know how many people have a garage freezer that is NOT energy efficient? It's more than you think, and that puppy is working nonstop year round. People don't upgrade because they don't feel a need to.

Nevada sales tax runs 7 to 8.1%
Arizona runs 5 to 8%

California runs 8.25 to 9. Not much difference.

Some of us really don't have the need...

Don't forget total appliance life cycle cost and especially the environmental costs such a mercury found in some energy efficient products...

Everything is relative... I watch very little TV and have no intention of upgrading until my TV dies... rabbit ears and all

It's just like my elderly neighbor that drives her 1972 Ford LTD to the Doctor and the market... she drives less than 1500 miles a year... there is no way she would recoup the cost of getting rid of a perfectly good car with 60,000 miles even if the new car got 100 mpg...

My grandmother would do 1 or 2 wash loads a week with her 1975 Kenmore... she would never recover the cost of buying one of the new Front Loaders even with the rebates... the kids next door wash several loads a day since the twins were born... the mom said she already wore-out her 5 year old set and bought a new pair for around $1500

Can't really speak to A/C... never lived in a home with it...

My City, Oakland CA is 9.75% and I believe it will be 10.25% in the near future... never thought it would ever be that high in my lifetime.

Have friends that moved to OR and bought new vehicles... 65k worth... it would have cost an additional $6,500 if they still lived in CA

Mostly on the Western Side... I'm more of a Western WA type anyway... similar sales tax as CA but no personal income tax... not the best for retiree's though... property taxes can be very unpredictable unless the prediction is up

why contine this discussion...? All the new TV's meet the rule. It doesn't go into effect until next year, you won't be able to buy a non complying TV by that time...
and the law is for you and your electric bill, why all the crying,,,,
