The problem is many parents simply don't deal with the the multitude of issues that surround youth.. Many just sweep things under the rug and hope for the best.. Not quite good enough and I think its great that we have a curriculum that will expose youth to more than just reading, writing and arithmetic and tackle some of the more complex issues that can impact their own lives. We need more open minded people in society, not the other way around.

I absolutely agree with you both, this is the sort of attitude I expect of an emotionally mature adult, and, heck, well brought up children as well. Homophobia is ignorant, cruel, and unenlightened. As much as I partially blame the sorts of circumstances that make it easier for someone to end up that way, I by no means am willing to let individual people off the hook for not finding it within themselves to be more. We are people, and we've all better natures we could be choosing to listen to.

Given the photos of protesters, one has to wonder if the parents were educated in the Canadian school system. If they were, it's surprising that they oppose the curriculum. Sex-ed was introduced in Grade 4 (aged 9) in the 1960s, and no one seems to have suffered from having sex-ed information at that age. If the majority of protesters were not educated in the Canadian schools, should Canadian practices be changed because newcomers don't like how things are done? I don't think so.

I would agree. Sex ed in the 1960s was very tame. If today's version of sex ed involes porn/masturbation imagery, and gay anal sex, this is not normal.
Whether the parents want their children to learn about sex or at what age is completely irrelevant. Sex is all over and any kid can look it up on any porn site. It is no longer a debate about what you do or do not want your kids to learn but rather where you want them to learn it.
Kids will learn about sex at a very early age due to the internet so the real question is not whether the kids should learn about sex because they can do that anytime they like. The real issue is where and from whom are they going to learn it.............a teacher in a classroom or from an internet porn site.
These mostly ethnic parents live in this "don't ask don't tell" fairyland. They have this idea that their kids won't look at porn because they are good Hindus, Christians, Muslims etc and certainly never the girls due to many of their sexist views.
This curriculum is not trend setting but rather just trying to keep up with technology before the kids start equating porn with healthy sexuality.

I don't think the point is whether someone can locate sexual imagery through electronics at the age of 9 if that is the objective. That is possible. The question is: at what age should children be exposed to adult interpretations of sexual activity, and how should that information be presented. It seems that Ontario is messed up, as are their constituents. Everyone is acting totally weird in relation to sex education in the schools.
Do children become interested in porn because they learn about it at school, or can they set porn aside and find other interests?
Bimbam isn't always engaging in back and forth posts left, right and centre but when he does post they are very insightful, nuanced, balanced and well thought out. He is a reasonable man and makes sound arguments.
