Are you saying current Canadian economy is better than America's? Canada is in recession and just cut rate twice while the US is recovering strong and thinking about raising rate. There is a huge divergence right now.

The truth is, even when unemployment rate is a whole 2% lower in Canada, it is still easier to find a job in the US. Much bigger economy, more vibrant and mobile private sector.

This is not directed at any particular poster, but I don't understand why it's so difficult to understand that people can have different climactic preferences.

When it's +40C humidex here in the summer, there are a good number of people that you overhear that they'd prefer -20C to humid summer heat. These people do exist.

Personally, my mood is not affected by the weather that much, and the weather that does affect me at least a bit isn't so much hot-hazy-humid summer weather or mid-winter cold snaps.

What gets to me is gloomy, rainy weather with coolish temperatures.

My least favourite times of year climactically are actually November and mid to late March precisely for this reason.

A think the problem for many cities in eastern Canada is that they are really cold even by my standards. If Canada had cities with more Mid-Atlantic (Philly, Baltimore, DC) climates it would be much better climate wise.

Yes, people may like four distinct seasons. People may love the snow and some cold crispy winter days. But I don't think anyone can look straight into my eyes and say "I just love 50 days where the temperature never rise above 2C. I just love -15C with wind chill on March 23 when the rest of world is basking in spring. I just love the ground being covered in 5 inches of snow for 5 month of the year".

It is hard to argue that in 90% of Canada, the winter is simply too cold and too long, no matter whether one likes four distinct seasons or not. When you need scarf and down jacket in mid March, you have bad weather. There is no way to sugar coat it.

Whoever says "I just like the typical Canadian climate we have here" is just kidding himself. I mean, seriously? I see people flying to Florida in January, but few flying to Yellow knife in July because they miss the cold weather that much.

Weather preference is not purely subjective. The vast majority of people prefer moderate weather because that's when our body feels most comfortable. Practically everyone on earth feels more comfortable at 20C than -20C, is it not right? Weather is not color or food, where people can prefer vastly different things. Our bodies are built in largely similar ways. There is some variation of course but in general, nobody really likes extended period of extreme weather (say lower than -15C or higher than 40C).

Yes, there might be people who prefer -20C over 40C - completely possible, but it is hard to imagine anyone who prefers -20C over 10C, or 20C or even 30C. And the problem with Canada weather, which many are denying here is that there are too many days where it is uncomfortably too cold for 99.5% of the world's population.

Boy, if this isn't a classic First World Problem. Oh, how you suffer!

-20C and sunny is better than 10C and pouring rain to me.

that's fair, however, there are plenty of Canadians cities which can have 20 straight -20C sunny days, but 10C with pouring rain all day is rare in this world. It is usually all day with drizzle (like Vancouver) or pouring rain for a couple of hours (those tropical cities with rainy season).

All day drizzle with cool temperatures sucks too.

Temporary pouring rain on a warm summer day (as in the tropics, or in a typical central Canada summer) is fine with me.

I never said I was suffering. I was just pointing out facts which you can't deny and also explaining my climate preferences.

Yeah, I don't get it either. The OP seems to be operating on the premise that "Canadians would flock to live in a tropical climate if they could," and I just don't see that such is the case. While some--such as the OP-- undoubtedly would, it seems to me that most of us like things the way they are, and don't feel ourselves hard done by if we have no "tropical Canada" to move to permanently.

If Canadians want to live in a tropical climate, they can certainly apply to immigrate to warmer countries: the US, the Philippines, Costa Rica, Spain, and so on. Nothing is stopping them.
