When they came out with the S9+, which has an awesome camera (good for my business as a Realtor), I gave in.
The S9+ is a great phone and it was my previous handset until the S21 came out. I upgraded for two reasons, I wanted to try 5G networks and I came across some unexpected $$ that allowed me to buy it from Samsung directly at a nice discount with my trade-in. I also previously used the S4 when I was a realtor myself.

How do you like the S21? Other than 5G, what is better?
The battery is better and the micro-processor is faster. Nothing that I couldn't live without as the S9+ would have worked just fine for me. All a matter of preference and the opportunity to upgrade at the time.
I would like to know; how often do you upgrade your phone?
My average is 2-3 years. My longest period without an upgrade was between my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and my Samsung Galaxy S21+. Next year I might get either the S23+ or S23 Ultra (depending on how good the trade-in offer is).
I keep my phones as long as possible. My current phone is an iPhone 13. Prior to that, I had a Google Pixel 2. My move to iPhone was more "forced" than not. My Pixel 2 was working flawlessly, and it looked pretty much brand new. However, it was 1 year beyond its end of life in terms of being supported by Google. At that time, Google basically supported devices for 3 years from date of release. This became unacceptable for me. So I switched to iOS as Apple tends to support their phones for about 5 years AFTER it stops selling them - so about 7 years total.
Google has since increased that to 5 years.
That said - I intend to keep my iPhone 13 for as long as it works for me. Since I used MacOS anyways, going iPhone actually worked out better for me.
2-3 years is typical for me as well. When I upgraded from my prior Samsung S9+ to my newer S21, Samsung offered me a trade-in offer that I couldn't resist. There was nothing wrong with my S9, but the S21 was my first 5G phone and I like it very much.
As often as the trade-in value makes sense. Sometimes that's every year. Other times, it's every 2 years. Recently, the trade-in promos have been aggressive, making the upgrades nearly free.
