I am seriously considering buying the new Pixel 6 Pro that comes out later this month.
When a new model of smart phone comes out, how long do most of you wait before you buy it (assuming you are not desperate to buy it...such as do to losing your current phone)?
On the average, I wait 2-3 years to upgrade my phone. After that, I like to buy/order as soon as it can be. I don't like to wait a few months after the initial release date and I am an early adapter. The only time I ever bought a phone less than 2 years after my prior one was when the current phone became inoperable. If you can afford to upgrade to the new Pixel Pro, I encourage it. I think you will be happy.
Depends. I either upgrade every year, or every other. For my personal line, it was every 2 until I started on the Galaxies, then I had a Galaxy S6, 7 and 8. Replaced the 8 with a Pixel 3, kept that for I think a year until the iPhone 11 Pro came out, then got the Pro for work so I could dual SIM.
Since then, I've had the 11 Pro, 12 Pro and 13 Pro now. I kept my work iPhone 7 and iPhone X for 2 years, then consolidated both my phones/numbers into the 11 Pro. Work lets me get a new phone every year - one of the fun parts of IT.
I just switched to an iPhone (13 Pro). I'll keep it until it can no longer support my needs. At this point - it's more about the apps and support as these phones are plenty powerful.
I had a Pixel II that was more than enough to satisfy my needs... except that it was no longer supported.
The new Pixels will be supported for 5 years. The iPhones are typically 7 years. This may be way beyond the length of time some keep their phones, so it may not matter. But something to keep in mind if you are going to wait.

I prefer not to spend money on a new battery, considering that new models always have improvements, so it's usually 2-3 years when it gets to the point where I have to charge it more than once a day with minimal use.
This one, however, an iPhone XR I got in early 2018 and it's still doing well, only having to charge every other day.
If I know which phone I am going to purchase, I just wait until the promotion or pricing is good enough. Often this is at immediate launch... but not always. For example, with the Pixel 3, the best deals were about a month after the phone launched. With the Pixel 5, the best deals were immediate.
On the phone with Verizon ordering one right now. This is for an employee though. I buy when I need ... I should say want... not need.... I rarely need a phone.
I will buy a P6 Pro for myself in a few months when my contract gets closer to being over.

I won’t jump out and buy the latest as soon as it comes out. And I tend to buy last years flagship. Was a time when the latest was a big jump from last year. Not so much these days. I got my iPhone 11 in March and it is basically as fast as my wife’s 12. Was $200 less. No 5g on the 11, but we don’t have 5g in our area.
I guess with the sunsetting of 2G technology, it's about time for an upgrade sooner than later. I guarantee by the end of 2021 or 2022 that phone will stop working in the US.
