Robynn you went to the wrong DMV if you were there for over an hour, Moncks Corner I walk in and out with everything done in less than half an hour on a busy day...
You have to pay the taxes before you can register the DMV will not even start the process without the tax receipt.....
Well, it didn't happen that way when we registered, but maybe the DMV worker was just dizzy.
If you finance a car here in SC the taxes are usually rolled up in the deal, $300.00 Sales tax + your first years property taxes, every year after that you should get a bill for the property taxes and every other year you should get one that has property taxes and tag renewal charges...
THAT would explain why both my car renewals only listed one fee. I just haven't been here long enough. Thanks for the clarity.
Edit: at the tax office I had to show my title and fill out a form too.
This process is for people that move from out of state.
AHA! Maybe this is where the whole disconnect came in. All our belongings were locked up in a storage unit we didn't have access to, and we didn't have the vehicle title. There was a whole process, so maybe that process messed up the order of things in our case.
Nevermind, ignore all my confused posts. Carry on.
I agree with the policing of people who do not get their tags switched over.
Other than military personnel, everyone who moves here is required to do so and by NOT doing so, they are avoiding paying taxes. It's not news btw .. this has been an on-going issue in the greater Charleston metro area....
I used to be, until the other half lost our marriage certificate after she got a new DL. It took months to get a replacement, and without it they wouldn't let her register her car here. Her title was in her maiden name.
For me it was a whole lot easier, except I lived in corp housing (aka hotel) and then an extended stay for about the first 5 months. I had no permanent address and wasn't able to switch over my DL and car until I actually had one.
Granted, that's probably the exception rather than the rule...

Maybe not so much... I forwarded our mail to a box and then my dh put all the utilities in his name only, so I had no physical address and then I had no proof of residency... I had to get my name added to a utility bill and that's what made me late. When I moved from state to state before, all I had to have was my old DL and proof of residency...
