I like the hype because it helps scare the people who shouldn't be on the road in bad weather from venturing out. Keeps the roads more bearable for people that can handle the conditions.
2" or 2' coming this week? Who cares? The only difference for me is whether I take the truck or the car.
Where were you early last decade when a couple of foot plus heavy wet snows knocked power out in Mecklenburg, Anson, and Union counties? My grandma went three weeks without power during the freezing winter because the heavy snow pulled down power lines. Further, winds will be howling this weekend, further increasing chance of power outages.
That's nice. I was living in Pittsburgh in the early 90s. My subdivision here has underground utilities so I'm not overly concerned. But I do have a fireplace for heat & plenty of wood & a generator with 50 gallons of gas, so again I'm not concerned. I bet that all of my neighbors will try to leave for friends & relatives houses like they did during the ice storm in 2002. But any of their trees that come down will be headed into my fireplace.

Most likely this will be the case. Unfortunately such forecasts don't lead to high ratings on TV. I've observed that when Charlotte has had some really heavy snow, there wasn't a TV personality forecasting it at all.
Here is the telling 1st paragraph of the article....
Meteorologists continued trying to make sense of computer-generated forecasts Thursday, hoping to figure out how much snow is coming to the Carolinas for Christmas.

i.e. that is code speak for "we have no freakin idea how much/if any snow is coming....."
Lazarus is correct, you watch the local windbags and they are going to hype this up instead of trying to be sensible....
