I no that no city is perfect, but i was wondering besides the probably obvious like traffic, what are the down side of charlotte, and what are the upsides? I don't have any kids, so schools don't really matter to me. I am more concerned with the community and its enviroment, friendly people, places to hang out, etc.
So are you looking for the downside of Charlotte? If so, I would say
-awful public schools
-very high crime rate in some areas (more the other cities)
-bad traffic with no means to an end (see next point)
-No money available to improve the city schools, traffic, crime, etc.
-growing too fast leading to an increase in the negative things mentioned above
-too damn hot (for me)
However, all of the good stuff to me outweighs the bad stuff so I decided to buy my first house and "settle" here.

Frank, you and I agree on a lot of things you post - but I CANNOT let your statement that Charlotte has "awful public schools" stand unchallenged. This is just too broad of a generalization and not completely true.
Charlotte has some awful schools, yes. But Charlotte also has some FANTASTIC public schools. It is just not fair to lump the whole group together like you did when there are more good ones than bad ones. I have seen you make this kind of reference before and don't think it really paints an accurate picture.

True. I will try to be more objective and say that "Charlotte has the worst public schools out of the 5 towns/cities I have lived in previously" Not all of the CMS schools are bad, but, most of them seem to have more problems other public schools which I have seen (granted thats not many).
As a side note, anyone see the article about the 4th grader who brought a gun to school here in Charlotte?

I don't regret moving to NC, and I don't regret moving to the Charlotte metro region. Everything I need or want is within easy reach, and with some creativity there is hardly ever a lack of something to do. I'd like to be making more money without a corresponding increase in the cost of living, but really any complaints I may have are minor.

Frank, you're killing me here! You admit you don't have much experience with the schools here, but you still think most of them have problems??? Again, the majority DO NOT have problems - a 9 year old bringing a gun to school (which wasn't loaded by the way, thank goodness) does not happen here very often at all - though it does happen in many cities these days sadly. It is not right for the very good schools in Charlotte Mecklenburg to suffer because of a few bad apples.
I loathe these posts, do I like it, will I like it, what do you like, what don't you like.
I'm not singling you out, but these posts are really just feeding the trolls. You have to come down research and make a decision for yourself.
Good Luck and welcome if you chose to come. I will take NC anyday over the 'Noreasters I left in NY.
