Let's hope the Appellate Court comprehends the argument, sees the unconstitutionality, and skips past the political BS that shoved this contract down our throats. Immediate cancellation is a good start.
Then the state can figure out how to put in two additional All Purpose travel lanes (that are built to withstand all types of vehicular traffic) in on top of the inferior, light duty lane construction the toll lane fools are building.
This is the type of organization we're battling for control of our roads over the next 50 years! If, and most likely when, they declare bankruptcy on the I-77 project, ALL taxpayers in NC will get to pay them off.
From the article: ... a previous WBTV investigation found Cintra has a history of borrowing billions of dollars to build or toll roads, driving up the cost of tolls and then declaring bankruptcy when usage of its roads drop and the company can no longer pay its bills.
The company’s toll roads in Chicago, Indiana and Texas have each gone bankrupt. In Chicago and Indiana, the company still made a profit on the roads even after declaring bankruptcy by selling the toll rights.
Under its deal with North Carolina, if Cintra were to default on the I-77 toll lanes, North Carolina would have to cover its losses up to $175 million, NCDOT says on the project’s website.
Let me get this straight...people entrusted or elected to positions of power may have put personal gain before public interest?!
"I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here!- Captain Renault
That bill was sent to committee which dropped all Toll Lane language before it was re-voted and approved.
Back to zero!!!
Many people believe this was a ploy all along by Bradford and Tarte to "look good" and save their re-election bids, since there's no interest among the legislative leadership to stop the tolls.
I do think people are making this project sound a lot worse than it likely will be. The 50 year thing is pretty bad, but I don’t buy people saying that traffic will actually get worse. Merging/exiting was a concern, but based on the video that was posted recently, that doesn’t look bad. Sure, tolls are annoying but you don’t have to use them and it should make traffic at least a little better for the non-toll lanes.
Now I just need to remember to avoid 77N at 10:30 PM too due to the construction because twice in the last week I’ve sat in standstill traffic because of it. Who knew that many people were on the road at 10:30 on a weekday...
