I have to say the same thing....a bar is being replaced by a bar. The former bar has been there at least 8 years......can someone please tell me what is the difference?
Myers Park, Ballantyne, and the Peninsula are not uptown and therefore zoned differently. I think they'd have a problem with Hooters in the middle of a neighborhood......but in a shopping center or commercial zoned area......who cares?
Has anyone heard the leadership at the church complain?
All the remarks are easy to say if you don't live Uptown or only come Uptown every now and then or just work Uptown...Anyone would be concerned about things coming to their neighborhood...true for any neighborhood anyone invested in...not just Uptown.
I bet people in Myers Park & Ballantyne & The Peninsula wouldn't want one right in their neighborhood either...would they be considered stuffy & snobbish?
You are in a different climate in downtown, not a typical neighborhood. Downtown will continue to grow, thrive, and bring in establishments not everyone is in agreement with. But at the end of the day, you are living in Rome, and you know what "they" say about that.
I thought when I moved here that the crane with nail in it neck story was blown out of proportion, this story is just the same. Hooters is restrurant, not a bar. Hooters averages 72% of its income from food. If the hating is because of hotshorts, you can see skimpier things on standard cable and just out in public. I think the more options to eat in uptown the better so that it makes it more exciting to live downtown.
I've lived in uptown for 3 years now, 1 as a renter and 2 as an owner...and I'm pro-Hooters.
Uptown, like any mixed-use area is going to have...well...a mix of uses. So, as mixes go - some ingredients will be good, and some will be bad, according to one's personal preference. For example, I'm not particularly thrilled with all the churches uptown. But, I don't complain about them (I'd like to preserve my slim chances at Heaven).
Like any mix, the trail mix I had with lunch for example...those cashews and M&Ms were great, but boy did those raisins leave something to be desired. Thankfully, my co-worker loves raisins, and ate them.
To close the loop - for those of you against Hooters - I'll eat your cashews...and in exchange, you eat my raisins on Sunday.
That way we can all get along in the trail mix of uptown.
who cares if hooters is in the city and the town was WAY TO QUICK to judge coyote ugly, that bar is no different or roudy than any other bar/club in the city. People judge way to much. IT'S A CITY, it's going to be crazy, loud, fun.
The girls at hooters have more clothes on than most bars/clubs in the city.
And coyote ugly is a nice place to go with your friends and hang, most people do not get wasted and puke all over the streets....

Not to mention the fact that the girls typically change AT the restaurant, so you wouldn't even see the Hotshorts unless you actually went into the restaurant.
1. I work uptown. So do a lot of people. Hooters isn't exactly...professional. Anyone who says it's just another restuarant is kidding themselves. I know people, men included, who won't go into the place on principal. You don't usually find people feeling that way about a Fridays. It may be wrong, but if I saw someone I work with heading into hooters for lunch, I could not look at them the same way again.
2. I wonder if everyone would be so free-wheeling and cavalier about this if the servers were men with no shirts on, and the place was called "Hunks" or something.
3. I just don't like the place. True to its slogan - it's tacky. And I already have to see women objectified everywhere else - can I at least not be accosted while I'm walking into the office?
I wouldn't officially oppose Hooter's moving into the space - they have as much right to it as anyone else. I consider myself too much of a free speech/free thought advocate to force my feelings or beliefs on anyone else. But I do really hope it doesn't go through - for the purely selfish reason that it would bother me and totally gross me out.
I have worked uptown for 2 years and I have lots of friends who live there. Most are not concerned and realize that living uptown you get a variety, hence not living the suburbs. Its going to be a abit brighter, louder and more crowded, hence why some people love it. I would only ask theat they have a slightly subdued sign. I wish all the places would and so far so good. What we don't want in uptown is empty places, that can kill an area. Like the Polk building, whats going on with that. In fact I am going to start a thread on that.
There are churches and graveyards all over uptown, so this is not like any other downtown/uptown. It really is unique. So going to be hard to avoid them.
We really should be asking why isn't there more coming to uptown of the middle class nature like Hooters. I don't need another Feast/HOM.. I would like to see some retail come in. By Gateway, there is Subway, Bojangles, Quiznos, Chick-fil-a, etc. Trade and Tryon seems to only get "fancy" places.
As far as Coyote Ugly, I think if they could have offered a bit more toned down... I wonder whats going to go there now.

I understand your points, but lets look at this from a business perspective, guys are visual so this place makes money. I believe if women would frequent a place with topless guys, there would be a franchise called Hunks. They just don't succeed. Hooters is just more well known than others. Look at many others places already uptown and they don't dress much different. I would not frown on co-workers going there. Heck its one of the few places uptown you might be able to get lunch for $10.
Reminds me of a story about 15 years ago, we took my cousin to Hooters before his Wedding, it was frowned upon by many in the family. (That was in essence his bachelor party 8 guys having beer and wings at Hooters). 10 years Later I go to visit same family in Florida, they go to Hooters all the time because you can boat to it. It's a perception thing.
This is all because of the name. If it was called Bob's Brew Pup and had the same servers, would anyone even talk about it.
I understand that guys are 'visual' creatures. That excuse gets them out of an awful lot, when you think about it - but I digress.
I view uptown - and specifically Trade/Tryon - as a place of business. I walk past the Grad probably 3-4 times a day going back and forth between business meetings. The idea of my male colleagues going there on their lunch break just creeps me out. They can do what they want in their spare time - go to strip clubs, max out their credit cards on internet porn, whatever. I don't have to know about it.
- but if I walk by Hooters and see Brad and Dave from Finance going in for lunch, I would just never be able to take them seriously again. I would always be thinking "he goes to Hooters! he goes to Hooters!". It also conveys something of a 'boys club' mentality...I mean are Brad and Dave really likely to ask their colleagues Jill and Susan to join them for wings with a side of cleavage and ass cheek for lunch? And eww, even if Jill or Susan did go..how uncomfortable would that be? Just the thought of sitting in a Hooters with any of the guys I work with makes me cringe.
Note - I'm not saying any of this is grounds to stop Hooters from opening wherever the hell they want. I just personally don't want it to happen.
