From snap, to welfare, to plain ole panhandling, they ( when you total the benefits) can live like a person who works making 30k a year. It actually discourages them from getting a real job. Why work when you can get all these free benefits ( paid for by my hard earned tax dollars).. I say boot them away, and cut them off....
I am sure there is a small percentage of homeless that put themselves there and has no intention of making changes in their life even if given the opportunity. I do not feel this is the case with the majority of homeless.

How someone ends up homeless I am not sure.
I do agree with others that people may be much closer to it than you think.
Job loss, physical illness, one bad financial investment, you name it.

The issue in large part is getting off the street once one ends up there.
Not having an address, working phone number, transportation, and often times a valid ID are just logistical issues that are hard to over come. If you have no family to give you a break, you really are up against it.

Here are questions to ask yourself:
1. Why is a country that has more natural resources, people resources, talent, skill, ability, and the freedoms to act, have so many homeless, sick, and financially broke citizens?
2. Why is this nation trillions in debt?
3. Why are our Veterans of the Armed Services so poorly treated in regards to healthcare?

We the citizens do not want all these needless wars, but we have them.
We the citizens do not want to foolishly waste resources and be trillions in debt, but we are.
We the citizens do not want poor healthcare, but we have a current Government determined to provide it.

I am all about the idea and ideals of personal responsibility.
When you in fact do so, and our elected leadership is determined to run the ship aground regardless, this creates a whole new dynamic and problem to solve.

Where you at lately pink caddy? Forest Hills and DR taking up all your time now?

We can't wonder as a society why things get like this when we have a very well funded propaganda machine who are all about screwing the takers... homeless = "$#@! em!"... mentally ill = "$#@! em!"... unemployed = "$#@! em!"... poor = "$#@! em!"... not born in this country = "$#@! em!"

Once you're convinced the symptoms are the core problem there's not much you can see beyond that. Especially when you believe taking from the takers will improve your own lot in life. There's dripping irony in believing the so called takers are the ones who need tough love and need to learn the hard way. It's all good until you're suddenly a taker yourself.

Holy ancient thread bump...

I suppose if this has veered back into semi-seriousness, I've thought for a long time that many homeless people are those who cannot fit into the modern world. It is all the little complexities and rules that come with being alive today. Paying bills when due, managing a checking account, keeping your car inspected, filing taxes, dealing with insurance premiums and claims.

A few centuries ago, people who wanted a simpler life could work seasonally, shack up in a barn. They were drifters who could earn a living and get by cheaply. The structure of today's society doesn't leave room for that, and we try to regulate it out of existence.
