I am considering buying a new home with upgrades right now at 1/2 price. Are the following upgrades worth it?
-Gas stove and dryer vs. electric
-Adding jets to owner's bath soaking tub
-Electric fireplace (don't have gas or real fireplace option--I think the electric flame looks cheesy but everyone on here seems to like fireplaces)
-Side-by-side stainless fridge vs. freezer on top
-small kitchen island vs. none

Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!
I think gas vs. electric stove is a personal choice, but I would definitely go with the gas option, as it's very costly to change from electric to gas later on.
I would not add the jets to the tub unless you take whirlpool baths very often.
Definitely get the fireplace. It's not something you'll want to do on your own. It adds to the value of your home, when you're ready to sell.
I personally don't like side-by-side refridgerators (personal choice).
Get the island, again, it's not very likely that you will add it yourself later on.

I like a side by side if you have a stand alone freezer or no kids!
Gas is much better than electric if you can swing it. jets aren't really important, fireplace yes! Island if your kitchen is big enough! they are nice for working on...
I just returned from KB homes studio and the total came to $45,000. This would essentially cost me approximately $23,000 after 50% OFF. My home only cost around $150,000 with the lot.
$23k in upgrades on a $150k home seems like putting lipstick on a pig to me.

That's REALLY insulting, but very funny...in a strange kind of way.
Unfortunately, that's how some builders make their money. They sell the structure at a reasonable price point, but then hammer the buyer with high priced upgrades. Half of those upgrades should probably have been included, but it would then change the price of the home, making it less desireable for certain budgets.
We did $35,000 upgrades on a $145,000 home with KB. I couldn't imagine the home without some of the upgrades.
Was wondering what you got for your $35K
We had been looking at a Tyler and had figured minimum of $15K.
The house we eventually bought from M/I came with a lot of the upgrades as standard, they also gave 10K "free" we only spent another 5K and got everything I wanted.
kitchen and baths are the most expensive to upfit and give the least in ROI for resale or investment. Look at flooring and if you do upgrade those areas, do it for YOU because after all that is who will be getting the soft cost ROI for those investments.
