Does anybody remember the Chevrolet Citation? I used to see those cars all the time but now I rarely see those cars anymore, they were quite popular back in the 1980s and I'm wondering why they're so scarce?
Who so scarce? Because they were big steaming piles 'o poop...along with the Pontiac Phoenix and the other GM J-cars of the time...my brakes went out, over and over, and the dealer's comment was "oh yeah...these do that a lot". Niiiice...oh, and the lack of engine power was just ugly...not Hyundai Excel bad...but still awfully pathetic.
Yeah, I remember them - the youngest ones have to be 20+ years old. They were Chevy's first venture into the front wheel drive market in 80 or 81. Not terribly ugly and I believe they sold pretty well. Never owned one though. Never thought of owning one either.
My brother had the good one, the XR6 or something like that. Had the HO V6, which was the ONLY decent thing about that piece. He had it for a year, then the head cracked. We beat the living tar out of it and dropped it off at the local crusher with the title on the dash. lol
Actually; the 1980 Citation (and friends) was the worst one by far--------just that many were sold that model yeqar.
1981 was built better
1982-85 were vastly improved vehicles with fuel injection, the stering rack mounted to the crossmember (look under any 1982-96 Olds Cutlass Ciera, etc-------same basic platfrom as the X bodies).
The problem beinthat the reputation of the Citation was ruined hence the newer ones being much rarer due to low sales.
The x11 model was a fairly decent attempt at sporting the model up but as a previous poster mentioned, the brakes were lousy along with having GM's typical 1980s fit and finish (or lack of).

I know that they've sold around 800,000 Citation's in the 1980 model year, I was really surprised that it was the Chevy Citation that holds the record for most units sold in one model year instead of the Toyota Camry or the Honda Accord/Civic.

I remember them, but by now they are all old and worn out, just like AMC Gremlins, Javelins, and Matadors. Same goes for Ford Mavericks and Pintos, and Chevy Vegas and Monzas.

I saw an old rusty Vega last year It looked like it had been sitting by the curb in the neighborhood for ages.
They're scarce because they were cheap pieces of **** designed to replace the beloved Nova which was much better built, worth more, lasted longer and still had a dash of the old school.
Thus being built cheap as they were they didn't last long. Same goes for the Chevy Vega, Chevette, Celebrity, Ford Pinto, Tempo, Topaz, AMC Gremlin....
And yes the 1980 Citation was GM's first attempt into the FWD market.
I know of a guy that had an '81 Citation about 10 + years ago, had the crap 2.8 liter V6 in it....car had some balls for a 110 hp anemic boat anchor.
