These cars were use once and discard. No one would even consider rebuilding one. The cost to rebuild it would be about the same as a newer better car.
I still see plenty of the 1980s Toyota 4x4 pickups around in my area (I live in SE Washington State), I rarely see the pre-mid 1980s Toyota's, Datsun's and Mazda's around anymore though.

Haha, funny.

I saw one a few days ago, a sad looking rustbucket.
I wondered at the time why I see so few of the survivors. Not many survivors is why.

Citation. Omega. Remember the Charleton Heston movie, "Omega Man"? Greek for LAST.

Phoenix. Rising from the ashes.

Someone at GM had a sense of humor, apparently.

I had an '84 X-11. The 2.8 "HO" V6 put out 135 HP, sad by today's standards, but remember that the Trans Am and Z-28 only had 140HP out of 305 V8s, the Vette only had 180. IIRC, the redline was 6500 RPM, again high for those days. The suspension package was competative for it's day, cornering was the car's strong suit. I used to run mine in autocrosses and did OK. Like most 20-something kids I beat the crap out of it, motor never gave me a lick of trouble. NY road salt and rust did it in. BTW, the fuel injection didn't come out on the HO V6 until '85, the last model year.

Yeah, those things were bad for rusting, even here in parts of the south because of moisture. By 1984, the Toyotas had improved and 1986, the Mazdas did. I think Nissan kept alittle bit of an issue even in the late 80s. My dad had a '88 Nissan truck that had not been much in the salt (as we dont get near as much snow as places up north) and it had already developed rust in strange places.

Now, dad has grandpas old '85 Nissan truck that he uses strictly to haul the garbage to the local dump. Its pretty rust free being a southern truck, but the front floor has some rust because the windshield had developed a leak and water had settled in causing the rust. Here is a photo of the little ugly beast with 246K miles and still runs like a sewing machine with ice cold factory A/C!

I dont see any rust on the 80s Mazdas here. I had a '87 Mazda truck that was totally rust free and my uncle has an extra work truck, a '86 Mazda B2000 LX thats still totally rust free. I had been considering buying this truck (like I really need another car - lol) from him just to use as a work truck to drive to work since it gets about 24 mpg. It does need paint though, but the inside is still like brand new and its the luxury model, which was pretty rare. Its very dirty in this photo.

My parents had an '81 Citation - burnt orange color. When I started driving in '83, this was usually the car I used. The interior was pure plastic - cheap looking plastic! This car only had one option, and that was A/C. But I do remember how incredibly "gutless" it was, and how loud. I remember my grandfather bought a top of the line '84 or '85 Buick Skylark, which was also the X body, but with a V-6, AM/FM stereo, tilt, power everything, comfy cloth seats - now that was a smooth, quiet car with at least decent power. My parents had to get rid of the Citation soon after it was paid off since it was such a total P.O.S.

Asking if someone remembers the Citation is like asking an ex-hippie if they remember the 60s--
"Thankfully, no!"

yes I remember the citation and the chevette . I drove the chevette a couple of years ago when I was down on my money and paid 600.00 for it and it ran like a champ . I sold it to another gal who said she was down on her money and luck as well . guess chevette could be called the down on your luck and money car . LOL!!!
