Right the husband is probably working a Abbott Labs/Abbvie as that is the only major employer in that area that might draw someone in from out of state. Gurnee is the closest nice suburb to there. North Chicago is a run down post-industrial ghetto and Waukegan is only marginally better though it has a few nice pockets on the western parts of town.

If you want to commute to work on the Metra UP-N then I'd either go farther north to Kenosha, WI or much further south to Evanston/Wilmette as almost everything along that line in between is very pricey/rich areas and almost eveything north of Lake Bluff to the state line is trashy.

The naval base is closed. It closed in 1995. (Assuming you are talking about the Glenview Naval Air Station)

No- they are referring to the Great Lakes Naval Station in North Chicago.

5-10 Minutes(200k bracket): Gurnee, Grayslake
5-10 Minutes(300k bracket): Southern Wadsworth

15-20 Minutes(200k bracket): Antioch, Lake Villa, Lindenhurst, Pleasant Prairie
15-20 Minutes(300k bracket): Old Mill Creek and East Antioch Area, Lake shore Pleasant Prairie

Gurnee and Grayslake are generally white and middle class and are filled with shopping centers, and new subdivisions. Wadsworth is more expensive and peaceful, however, houses are bigger, lots are bigger, and it is more foresty. The more desirable part is to steer south of Rte 173(looks nicer, further from Zion ghettos, less crime). Schools are all average here.

East Antioch and Old Mill Creek is similar to Wadsworth, but has a bit more fields. Houses are in the same criteria. Schools are Milburn 24, and some of the better Antioch schools(a bit above average). Hey, they opened a new organic store nearby on Rte 173, called Old Mill Creek Country store, you should check them out!
