Anyhow, I always liked Elgin - grit, diversity, character, historic homes, commitment to the arts (how many suburbs even have live theatre and symphony center - saw YoYo Ma there), outdoor/nature activities, big park district facility/pool (is outdoor ice rink still there?), couple colleges for enrichment classes, a Metra stop... isn't there a microbrewery? There is some pretty good hiking/biking/kayaking near the Fox River there too.
Very true, there is more here when compared to surrounding towns. The casino offers concerts all summer as well, even a local park serves up elk and bison viewing in natural habitats.

I'll do just that if I ever hear back from the prospective employer in question. Somehow, I don't think that's going to happen very soon, if ever. Thank you to all of you who chimed in with advice!
