What guidelines are used for defining boundaries? MSA's, TV markets, employment patterns, seat of pants, gut emotions?

What I meant to say is Michigan City is not part of the Chicago area. I know geographically it is in Northwest Indiana. But mentally I only think of the Chicagoland portion of Indiana to be Northwest Indiana. Make sense?

More and more people are crossing the stage line and discovering what a great and affordable place NW Indiana can be. Its getting over the stigma of having the older and runned down areas such as Gary

a bit of info on the "Region"

Don't understand "cooler" and Lake County Indiana actually borders the city of Chicago itself so its for sure part of the "original" IMO

I agree, its a little bit out there.

An update on the tread ,it seems more and more people especially those of the S and SW suburbs of IL are considering NW Indiana as a place to live due to the high property taxes and values and the state's crumbling economy.

The planned West Lake light rail corridor will bring more commuters to NWI for the big city.

Is the Jersey shores of the Hudson part of Metro NYC? Are the VA and MD suburbs part of Metro Washington? Is Metro East part of Metro StL? Is Camden part of Metro Philly? Is Cincy's airport in Kentucky part of Metro Cincy?

How can there even be a question about NW Indiana being part of Chicagoland? Hell, Kenosha is far more on the fringes of Chicagoland and it's a part of Metro Chicago.

Haven't read the entire thread but it seems ridiculous than anyone could argue NWI is NOT part of Chicagoland, when you can literally walk from Hammond into the city limits of Chicago.
