Well, the number of people shot in the junk has been steadily declining since 2012 at least!

The graphics are clever and several of them are misleading. The name of the web site and the shot in the a@@ and the junk detracts from the potential serious nature of what could be portrayed here. It would be nice if someone did actually do the work to put the statistics in a nice easy to read graphical form, so I applaud that but this falls short. Yes the crime is scary and some of it shows declining trends even though many people on gut instinct know that crime now is worse in many cases than before.

Not really. The end of year murder and shooting numbers are completely unpredictable. We could see it jump up past 500 or even 600 if something happens. 2012 is, itself, evidence of this. The year prior, there was almost 100 murders less. A steady decline from the 90's? Hell yes. But not 2012.

Actually, crime HAS been declining since 2012. At least if you look at the year-to-date statistics. You can seen this trend right here: https://portal.chicagopolice.org/por...2029%20(4).pdf

It shows how total crime has decreased 14% from last year, 27% over two years and 34% over three years.

There is supposed to be something on crime statistics I think on one of the major Chicago news stations I believe on Wednesday. Even though they say crime is declining, most people do not believe it. So tune in to see what they say. If anyones knows exactly the station or time, please post it here.

Crime is declining, just not as much as the city and CPD say it is.

Yikes, the report I cited was just for one week in July. I'm sorry.

I wonder why the CPD doesn't have annual reports for years 2011-13? https://portal.chicagopolice.org/por...nual%20Reports

Ace Rothstein, it seems you're right. There's a practice of underreporting crime: http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Ma...o-crime-rates/.

It's been a fairly steady decline since the 90's with outlying years that buck the trend like in 2012.

Can't we combine all these random threads about random violence? What's the point of them popping up every day?

Why weren't they here back in the early 2000's when crime was much higher than it is today? Crime is bad and you have to deal with it - but it's going down no matter what anyone says. Not all at once, but going off about crime in Chicago in 2013 or 2014 makes me wonder what people were doing from 1968 through 2003????

Steven Levitt's argument is that legalized abortion was the biggest factor behind the nationwide crime decrease in the 90s. It was legalized in 1973 (Roe v Wade) so many of the would-be criminals of the 90's were never born.

From reading his book, it seems like a lot of the major determinants of crime are outside influences (e.g., the introduction of crack cocaine caused crime to go way up, legalized abortion caused crime to go way down).
