Do people feel safe in the city and the surrounding areas? it's always in the news shots, shootings and murders.

Master Jay is in Chicago ALL the time, and I always feel safe. A couple of minor interpersonal situations in 2019, and yet they were very safely and friendly resolved! I ride the train, drive, ride my bicycle, and walk through a number of neighborhoods. I've never felt unsafe. I'm trained in martial arts, but no one would ever know that. I'm 5'6", so I do not think I look remotely menacing. But I carry myself confidently, do not wear ear buds or walk with my phone against my ear, and am as friendly and respectful to anyone I encounter. Typically when one gives true respect, it is returned.- Master Jay in Milwaukee

In parts of the city during the day I feel safe. If I had to live in the city I'd want to own a gun for my own protection especially in some of the more marginal neighborhoods or those that border more marginal neighborhoods.

really? never?

you need to explore more of the city then, get out of your comfort zone if you know what I'm talking about.

I worked a sales job and have been to literally every part of town and there are definitely spots where I have felt unsafe, with drunk/drug addicted people hassling you, fights, shouting, racist comments, people with complete disregard for traffic laws, etc.

but most people don't ever go to those parts of town, with good reason

I feel very safe in my hood and most of the city where I have reason to be, but there are some unsafe areas. Riverdale, Englewood, Fuller Park, Chatham and parts of the south side where a lot of the crime is centered but it’s far from the Loop and north of downtown which is all safe.

smegmatite, no doubt there is a difference in feel for different parts of the city! That said, I've ridden my bicycle through North Lawndale as well as Edison Park, walked through South Lawndale as well as Norwood Park, ridden an El train through Lincoln Square as well as Englewood. So smegmatite is correct in the experiences. Z68359, I'm not sure where you're from. I'm from Milwaukee and come down to visit and explore. There is NO denying that some of the areas I even mentioned experience higher instances of crime or unsettling behaviors. But I have never felt unsafe. I'm not sure if you are a newer poster, so just in case, I shall bestow my words of logic once again: We hear on the news AND see with our own eyes that car accidents take place in all parts of Chicago. BUT does that really deter you from driving??? Take care, Master Jay in Milwaukee

I get around the city. I have done business in Englewood, North Lawndale, Washington Park, Roseland, etc. Never felt unsafe. Granted, this is during the day.
