Why would ANYONE move ANYWHERE without visiting first? Recipe for disaster.

Default Would you visit Chicago before moving there?

You are absolutely correct in both of your statements here!

It's not a knock against Chicago to say "No" in answer to the op's question but rather it's a sensible course of action to ALWAYS visit a proposed new location beforehand if you have any opportunity to make such a visit.

23 years ago I interviewed for a state professional job by phone. I had never even been to the state. I took the job and moved. I figured if I hated it I would move again. I love it here.

Teacher Terry, bless you. You're fortunate that it worked out. And if your career is being a teacher, then THANK YOU for your calling!

Always best to visit first, but if I flip the scenario, I have to say that I'd be okay moving to Toronto site unseen because from what I've read/heard, Toronto and Chicago are similar so I'm fairly confident I'd be comfortable in either location. With that said, I'll buck the trend and side with Person B.

*Plus, in this day and age, you can virtually visit with the hundreds of videos out there and Google street view.

As it happens, I've never visited a city before moving there, but that's because I've always moved with short notice (I'm a contract worker) and haven't had time. I've still always Street-Viewed around the locations of the apartments I'm considering living in.

It's always worked out; I've never wished I'd chosen a different neighborhood to live in. It'd be different if I were planning to buy a house, though.

Even with the advent of on-line videos of street scenes, I would still at least make a weekend ( or more) visit before moving--you have to get the "lay of the land" before making the leap.
