Default My office policy

My office is in the loop. After the hours of 9PM, women are NOT REQUIRED to take public transportation and can take cabs on the company dime. I do think this is a bit overzealous as I mentioned before. I work in commercial banking for one of the larger banks.

Many of my colleagues drive in, but some of us, including myself, rotate between driving and public transportation (L and Metra for me). I am not a fan of buses as they are too slow with too many stops. I also wish the Green EL would not make so many stops, particularly in rougher neighborhoods where few people get on and off. Sometimes, it runs express which saves me 10 mins going out to Oak Park, which is where 80-90% of riders who go into the city for work reside.

The green line is probably the most dangerous, but I feel safe on all the L lines

The green line is not that bad coming from oak park to the loop. I would not take it at 63rd st.

I think the Brown is easily the "safest", not that you're going to run into huge problems on the others.

Hmmm... Every office I've ever worked at downtown has paid for cabs for ALL employees after a certain time of night, regardless of gender. Your telling me this bank won't pay cab fares for male employees who work late? Strange. And probably illegal.

Default Lookout

They might pay for cabs for guys, but I don't know many guys who would ask. Double standards like this don't really bother me as the El is extremely convenient for me and the biggest both is waiting the 5-10 mins for the next train.

I've never heard of "asking" either. It has always been routine for males and females to take cabs home after working late at every employer I've had in Chicago. People just did it and filled out an expense report. It was commonplace. But of course, I was in an industry where it wasn't uncommon to be at work until midnight.

The Orange Line seems remarkably stewbum-free. Brown Line too, mostly.
