The ultimate source is God's Will. He decreed that we have free will to operate WITHIN the constrainst of His laws . . . BOTH physical and spiritual. The laws establish consequences for our choices . . . but WE choose to follow or violate them. It is impossible to have Dominion over the earth and all its inhabitants without that freedom of will.
How can you not understand that Dominion over anything requires the power of decision and choice? If we are not free to choose we would have no free will. But we have been given Dominion over the earth. . . so we have been given the free will to choose and decide by God's Sovereign Will. What do you not understand about this?.

How can we have free will when we had no existence outside the imagination of God?...How can the characters of a novel have free will outside the imagination of the author?...

How can one truly 'love God' ... without free will?

You are confusing our imagination (which is only a poor copy of God's) . . . with God's. We can create in novels . . . but we cannot imbue our creations with life. God does and that is the difference. Life is constant change that requires decisions . . . and that requires free will.

As I see it as well, Heartsong. The first Adam/ the old man/the flesh vs. the Christ/the new man/the spiritual man. I believe it's a theme that is even alluded to in the OT, where often a younger son supplants the eldest (eg. Jacob and Esau, ref. Romans 9: "It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.").
Right on, Pleroo. I don't recall if I already told you I agree with your understanding on this.
I've heard many interpretations of the book of Romans. I do not tell anyone how to interpret anything. I only share what I believe and let others believe as they will. Romans is a very complex book. It is my favorite of the "Pauline" writings.
Actually in the Greek it says 'having been prepared for destruction'....Implying that that is their purpose...
We are all prepared for destruction. If you think you are excluded from destruction, you are deluded IMO.
