That was not a "conservative" move, only favoring the right. It favors both the moderate and conservative spectrum, and tradition in general.
Sounds more like the traditional church rejecting a heavy move to the left. That's all. They're still more at the center than say the Baptists and fundies.
I've attended the UMC church for many years and have always been a little embarrassed by what has seemed to be a steady the move to the left by the Methodist hierarchy. For the first time in years, I'm proud that the UMC took a stand to hold the line on this issue.
(Had they gone the other way, we likely would have considered moving on).
I don't understand how anyone can go to any church, quite honestly. I simply cannot play church with pews and pulpits, etc... Also, with the Baptists being exposed for wide spread pedophilia along with the Catholics, I don't think church is a safe place for children.
Putting butts in seats increases the religious tax base (donations). Leadership cares nothing about spiritual responsibility or growth. The only almighty thing they are concerned with is the dollar.
"The parsons will dig their own graves. They will betray their God to us. They will betray anything for the sake of their miserable jobs and incomes. Protestant clergy don't believe in anything except their well-being and office".
- Adolph Hitler
"Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God."
James 4:4
And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto the shepherds; Woe be to the shepherds of Israel that do feed themselves! should not the shepherds feed the flocks?
Ezek 34:1-2
People are leaving the church by the thousands because their leaders have betrayed the gospel. Today's news is somewhat heartening, but is like using a squirt gun to extinguish a forest fire. As long as church leaders are debauched there can be little hope for truth and decency in our houses of prayer.
This isn't the last word you know. The sons and daughters of the Kingdom of Sodom will return.
that's me, hollering from the choir loft...
You quote Adolph Hitler with a smug face, not realizing that God does not dwell in houses made with hands?
The reason the UMC took a "conservative stand," is that it was too successful in recruiting African churches into their fold. And Africans Christians have been heavily indoctrinated by conservative Christians and solidly anti-LGBTQ. They have been the fastest growing section of the UMC. In the U.S. it is split a bit more evenly.
Almost the entire west division of the UMC is more liberal. We even have a lesbian bishop presiding over the western division. It wasn't a "terrific" move, it was what was predicted. Like the Southern and Northern Baptist churches split over race, the more liberal Methodist churches will leave over oppression of LGBTQ.
Right here in Colorado there are already meetings being planned to discuss the coming split.
My own UMC church has an open policy regardless of race, color, sex, or sexual orientation. The liberal side of the UMC is small, but we feel like a cancer is being removed keeping us from a closer walk with Jesus.

To me, the real church is found in the woods, or the ocean, or a lake or river, but people go to church for community or to satisfy a need for ritual.

The same happened in the Episcopal Church, Warden, or rather in The Anglican Communion, the global organization of which the US Episcopal Church is a part. The Anglicans in Africa and other areas do not like our acceptance of gays, including marrying and ordaining them, and so we are under some sort of sanction by the wider church. Whatevs.
