There was some laid back, feel good, sunny day, organic music coming out of New York in the 90's that wasn't depressing though:

Life's a bi*ch by naz & AZ - one of the most depressing rap songs ever..

I'll be the first to admit I'm not into that depressing stuff. I wouldn't say everyone was like that though.

To overlook the contribution of the Bay to rap music is criminal.

Songs and albums like his gave birth to the West Coast Rap scene as well as the Down South scene. Without Too $hort and this album, there would be no Snoop or Eightball & MJG or UGK...

Paris's controversial sometimes racist raps about politics and society predate that of Immortal Technique, Dead Prez and even Ice Cube's most scathing views on Death Certificate...

I'm old enough to remember a time when a lot of rap music was influenced by the West Coast...

It's funny. Masta Ace is from Brooklyn. But this doesn't sound or look like Brooklyn, does it? This sh*t goes hard though.

Bone Thugs are from Cleveland, but If you didn't know that you would guess Cali...

One of the most West Coast sounding records and groups to never come out of the West Coast. Sh*t is classic nonetheless...

This doesn't sound particularly East Coast, either. Listen to those slowed down wandering synths. What region of the country has that sonic signature? It's a shame because Boot Camp came with some of the hardest, most gutter sh*t to ever come out of the East Coast prior to this pandering garbage.

The Geto Boys sound like they could be from Oakland or Compton right here! That throbbing bass and those synthesizers are indebted to Cali G-Funk and Mobb music.

This also sounds very West Coast. It sounds like Scarface could have grown up in the same hood as Spice 1 on this track...

You must forget Houston has a reputation for putting out bland and depressing music too.
