What? So, you're saying that confederate states were fighting AGAINST slavery? Is that why blacks were fleeing the south to get to the north?

If you really think that the folks in the midwest and northeast are concentrating about issues in the south then I don't know what to tell you. We all have our own issues to deal with.

My argument is this. Northerns always speak of how us southerners are backwards and all this other crap; yet it seems a little hypocritical coming from them. My post is more of a rant and response towards those who on a daily basis make ignorant comments toward the south.

There are racist jackasses of all colors across this entire country, it's definitely not exclusive to the south. I guess that would be my response.

Now look at areas like Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, and more; much has changed.
Actually, when blacks tried to move into white neighborhoods they were not greeted with open arms. Have you ever heard of white flight?

The U.S. certainly has plenty of racial issues but relatively speaking it seems like we've been progressive in dealing with them. To my knowledge we're the only one of the so-called Western democracies to elect a black man as head of state and to have lots of blacks in high level government positions. Many of our large cities have been governed by minorities for decades.

In the few years that I lived in Atlanta it was not uncommon for whites to call me the 'n-word' as they were driving by. Also, some of those far-flung suburbs were like Klan enclaves. Even Chicago was never that bad.

I already know all that and that is exactly what I mean. Southerners fought; Northerners gave up and settled.

Doesn't surprise me in the least as there are stupid people everywhere and, as I said before, they come in all colors.

While I wouldn't exactly put it this way, he does have a point about how Northern, Western and Midwestern cities dealt with racism and segregation as opposed to how it was dealt with in the South.

In South, and more so in the 20th century, there was a set of people who specifically went after and attacked the foundation of segregation and racism head on culminating in the movement lead by Dr. King. People protested, rose up and said no to being treated the they were and there was literally blood in the streets because of that. In the face of that, normal everyday Whites (the ones not in hoods) had to face their inner demons and come to terms with who they were and how society should be. Not to say that racism and segregation do not exist in the South, but the cities there really had to deal with what segregation was and acknowledge it's existence.

In comparison, Whites in cities elsewhere in America acted like they had no racial problem. Even though most of them had no Jim Crow laws, as wave after wave of migrants from the South and overseas came they were separated out into their own neighborhoods. Red lining kept the upwardly mobile blacks out of upper class neighborhoods and suburbs. While there were no "separate but equal" laws on the books, schools in black or any other ethnic minority areas were almost always less well funded than in White areas. Employment discrimination was rampant and it was rare to see people of color in corporate America in large numbers let alone positions of leadership.

The literature of African Americans of that time reflect this situation such as in Lorraine Hansburry's "Raisin in the Sun" or Richard Wright's "Native Son" and "The Outsider" and even Malcolm X's biography. The effect of living in such an environment also led directly to Nation of Islam and the Black Panthers.

All of these factors lead to the massive riots sen in places like Detroit, LA, Boston, and New York in the 1960s and 70s. Since the people in charge didn't feel they needed to change because there were no actual laws on the books like in the South and they operated from a position that were not acting inappropriately. While the situation is far better now than it once was, their inability to address those issues in a meaningful way (particularly for black Americans) even to this day has ironically led to the massive migration of African-Americans back to the South where they can be more prosperous.

Now, this subject is far bigger than a post on C-D can do justice, but there is a very tangible difference in how "the racial issue" was dealt with in the South than elsewhere. Mostly revolving around not feeding into sanctimonious BS about people living in racial harmony singing kumbaya.

What the?

I lived in Atlanta all of my life and never once had that happen to me. Not to call you a liar, but you need to be more specific about where this occurred and when as it seems pretty unlikely.
