Yup. SF/Oak overtook Philadelphia despite having a much smaller population.(
SF Higher cost of living index is a huge factor in GDP output.
SF has a scarcity of land, ocean + bay views. COL,goods and services produced = at a premium and through the roof
Philadelphia abundance of land, COL, goods and services=relatively modest.
No suprise in the discrepancy.
And ad nauseum but needs to be introduced into this discussion yet again.
Trenton which is 15 miles from the city limits of Philadlephia is ridiculously omitted from Phillys metro. Thats $26 B of GDP. Reading which is about 35 miles NE of Philly not included. Another $16 B omitted. Sounds like spilled milk but that is a rightful $42 B that really should be in Phillys metro.

Love Philly but seriously? At MSA Philly is still 6 million inhabitants to SF MSA with 4.5 million inhabitants. There should be no excuse for a metro of 6 million to fall behind a metro of 4.5 million by output even with inflation, IMO

Honestly, who cares... I could care less that Vallejo adds to our GDP... there's jack **** to do there. Why not focus on the actual redeeming aspects of Philadelphia instead of on niggling aspects like GDP, especially when talking about towns like Trenton which have very few redeeming qualities.
Honestly, I don't get why GDP is such a holy grail on this site and not the actual cities themselves. Who gives a crap if there's slightly more millionaires in one place than the other... don't people move to these places for what the cities offer? Honestly, from the way half of this site obsesses over statistics I have to wonder if ANY of these people actually live in these cities or spend all day dreaming about doing so.
