Portero Hill is NOT downtown, but about a mile away
.
Nob Hill isn't downtown SF, nor is SoMa. People who live in those areas say they live in Nob Hill and SoMa, not downtown.
Those areas are not referred to as downtown SF. They aren't the office or commercial or governmental cores of the city. They're both peripheral residential zones.

But no WF whatsoever downtown. Just so we're consistently pedantic with your Detroit comments.
The topic at hand was suppose to be the top 10 downtowns in America. Why are we arguing about cities whose downtown's claim to fame are Whole Foods or Target? Does Minneapolis truly crack the top 10? We're being told its nice, but a pictures can't be found to back this claim up. Downtown Detroit has restaurants too- some are actually very upscale(though often located in hotels). There is actually a fairly nice water front. If I remember correctly- the Motor City Casino is downtown Detroit.
NYC
Chicago
SF
DC
Seattle
Philadelphia
Portland
San Diego
LA
Oakland
Can downtown Minneapolis replace any of these cities downtown's? If so, I'm basically leaning towards LA or Oakland. I'd actually argue that Oakland has a better downtown than LA. Oakland has a large array of restaurants and bars downtown- and not dive places either. You also have a Chinatown as well as Jack London Square(I believe its still a part of downtown), and you have Lake Merritt right there too.
Haha. You have been stating downtown Minneapolis looks dead based on Google Street View and then you go and list downtown Oakland as a top downtown area. Downtown MPLS tops downtown Oakland in regards to size, vibrancy, architecture, businesses, and general aesthetics, which this thread is about.
I would say downtown MPLS tops downtown San Diego when all of the criteria is taken into consideration.

I agree with all this. Downtown Oakland kind of sucks, and Minneapolis is well ahead.
I would say Minneapolis is Top 15. Oakland probably isn't even Top 30 or 40.
LOL downtown Seattle has a Whole Foods built in the base of a highrise , Also Target downtown is in the base of a highrise. I think they just build the grocery stores where the people are . IGA is in the basement of a department store downtown. And H Mart is building across from Pike Place Market in the old Nordstrom Rack Store downtown also. So you can build grocery stores downtown If theres a need all buildings have basements . Grocery Stores are suply and demand .
Did you not see my statement following the question I asked regarding the photos?
"For example, I know the photo nei posted was during early morning hours due to the sun's position. I also know that it was shot on a weekend as there aren't any suits walking around. Just saying."

Exactly.
Most US downtowns don't have the demand for grocery stores nor do they have the demand for any other retail. This fact plays a role in what separates America's top downtowns from the rest.

What does Whole Foods have to do with being a nice downtown?
