Hopefully Chicago doesn't have one of those it's the killing season opening ceremonies that happen on weekends in April every year it seems.
It always happens....especially when school lets out for the summer. Kids with nothing to do, many without a job/aren't old enough to get a job, etc. I can only hope for improvement year in and year out.
Philadelphia is at 41.... down from 75 this time last year.
Quote:
We haven't seen this low of a number at this point in the year for 20+ years
So far this year, Philadelphia is a safer city than it has been in at least two decades, if you look strictly at the number of people killed up to this point in the year.
The City's homicide rate is down 43 percent from last year.
Ramsey recently addressed the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists on what his department is doing to lower crime, specifically violent crime, in the city.
“We’re going to continue to tinker and to do things that we think are going to give us a jump on it so we can try to prevent some of these things from occurring.â€
Ramsey said the department has focused on traditional trouble spots like the 22nd District in North Philadelphia where 14 more murders happened in 2011 than any other police district. In that district alone, homicides have dropped from 10 at this time in 2012 to only two homicides so far this year, according to police.
“Increased investments in law enforcement in Phila., continuing our new strategies and a few new laws we will drive down the homicide rate,â€
Chicago is at 67 this year....last year through March there were 121 homicides. Quite the improvement. To be fair though, March of 2012 experienced a few weeks of weather in the 70s and 80s and had something to do with it. This year there hasn't been any warm weather. Winter came late and it's still in the 30s
Indianapolis is at 32.
Chicago is at 67.
St Louis is at 24.
Columbus, OH is at 15.
Milwaukee is at 12.
Columbus is running slightly behind last year, 15 vs 17. Last year was the 3rd year in a row where murder rates decreased. Indy seems to be having a very bad start.
The only reason chicago slowed down is due to the weather..weather is getting better shootings are rising back up
I know you've always been obsessed with Chicago having a high murder count, but still it always creeps me out when people always turn straight to the weather to try and explain why the murder rate is low. It's like when it's hot out and there are high murders they're raging about how many there are, and then when it happens to be chilly and the numbers go down they come out with "but calm down everyone, there should be more murders right now but this damn cold weather is keeping them down. It's coming through, just hold on". As if the weather is just an excuse for the murders being low.
It's Chicago. The city is cold half the year.
Does that half of the year not count for murders because they really should be much higher. What would it be if it averaged 120 degrees all year round? Would we win?
I'd rather focus on the positive that murders are down 65% so far this month over last month.

Hopefully the trend will continue: Chicago and Philadelphia deserve more... both them are great cities.
